I use a di into desk. Desk into computer through soundcard.

I think the desk can de bypassed and just di straight in through the sound card.

I got a decent di in musician for 50 quidish.

I think the boss 8 track di's itself, not overly certain though.

when i connect through the 8track im just gettin a clean sound not the amp sounds on amplitube, the way im connecting is, guitar-> 8track-> i connect the 8track to the mic input at the back of my computer via the headphone output on the 8track, does this sound right?

sometimes i do hear the amp sounds but kinda distant, the clean sound overpowers it dat make sense?

Dude you need to get yourself an audio interface that you can plug your guitar into, you can go through a di first if you want, and then the interface connects to computer via usb or firewire. Go to music production forum, check stickies, they'll tell you everything you need to know.
