I recently bought a Panasonic DVD recorder from England and to my surprise it came with a digital tuner so I set it up and lo and behold it picked up the 4 Irish TV channels and 4 radio channels which I didn't think it would being digital and all, but and this is a big but there's no picture with the TV channels only sound, it has an EPG guide, the digital text works as well, you see I thought that in Ireland we couldn't receive Terrestrial Digital, anyway why is there no picture when everything else works it's a bit of a puzzle to me, maybe someone out there knows the answer.

Basicaly the digital turner in your panny is an english mpeg-2 freeview tuner. Irish DTT is mpeg-4, a more recent standard.

Sound will work, if the machine has a cam slot, you might ber able to get a card to get it to work, otherwise you will need a stb..

So that's the reason mpeg2 can it be changed? It has no cam slot, what is stb?

The video part of the irish dtt channels is compressed via mpeg4 and your device has only an mpeg2 decoder chip on board. There are cam modules on the market which can do mpeg4 to mpeg2 conversion but are not compatible to every device.
    STB means settop box.
