Can you becme an apprentice at 28 yrs old. My son is a qualified metal fabricator and cant find a job in his trade as they are all now done by machines or semi skilled operators who work for buttons. He regrets now the apprenticeship he chose as there are less and less skilled workers required in the trade each year and he wants to re train as a motor mechanic. He is aware that he would be starting at the bottom again and is happy to do it if he can get the training and qualification he wants. How would he go about it. As far as we know FAS will only deal with apprentices up to the age of 22.

I don't think there is an age limit. I still deal with FAS and I'm 23 in the third year of my apprenticeship as a sparks. I work with a guy who is 25 and at the same stage I am. You just need to get a start with a mechanic who is willing to sign you on with FAS as an apprentice.

i don't think there is any age limit on mechanic apprenticeships. What i would sa though is that i have a friend who has been a mechanic for as long as i've known him, fully qualified and working for MSL, and at 29 years of age he was earning just 28k pa, now, i've no doubt that others can earn more than this but apparently it's one of the lowest paid trades, he gave it up to do factory work and instantly his salary went up to 40k PA. Just something to think about before he starts.....
