Parking Exemptions for Council Workers

In Dub. City Centre today...a motorist gets out of his car. Did not "pay and display", "so what" I thought.

Coming back to my car half an hour later...I saw the reason why no payment was made, he had a little plaque placed on his dashboard "Dublin City Council Maintenance Division".

Unbelievable...A private family saloon car which for all intents on purposes he possibly was not even using for Council work at the time.

So Dublin City Council makes sure that all us common mortels pay for their parking tickets or else suffer the consequences...but when it comes to themselves they have different rules.

Its a weekday, day time, he works for the maintainence department. Its quite possible he was working.

I don't know the exact arrangements, but there are several categories exempt from paying charges including street service vehicles and utility companies.

What really irritates me is the private cars of Gardai parked in the "Official Garda Cars" bay outside Harcourt St. Garda Station. Some of these are parked on the pavement obstructing pedestian flow. On occasion, there are so many private cars there that official cars marked/unmarked have to park on the corner of Hatch and HArcourt St. creating a hazard for many buses turning down Hatch St.

What is most annoying is that clampers rigorously enforce a coach bay just past the Garda parking bay turning a blind eye to all the illegal parking ouside the station. Bizarre.

Off Bow Lane there's a depot for the lad's who go around cleaning the streets, and all the car's parked in the available spaces have ''Dubin City Council'' illuminous jackets over the steering wheel!

There was a big fuss in New York about this practice a while back, with all sorts of people getting either parking plaques from various agencies or free toll transponders. Once the New York Times got interested it was cut back substantially. A few pictures of "Operation NoFlow" might get the Dublin papers interested in this...

Cue DCC workers being mugged for their Hi-Vis jackets. ;)
