Does anyone know when 999 is being scrapped and 112 becoming the ES number? It is being done to make 112 the European ES number. About time tbh!

999 has been scraped, it is no longer advertised as the emergency number, and will no longer receive compliance form new systems, such as mobiles.

Thou it was my understanding calls to 999 will still be connected for the foreseeable future, last thing you want is an annoying automated voice on the phone saying "the number you dialed does not exist"

Here 999 is still advertised as the emergency services number; and rightly so. B*llocks to 112. I'd rather 911 if we have to change it.

112 is a European Union directive in which all member states must offer this to access the Emergency Call Operator Service. 999 is and will continue run in parrell with 112.

The idea about having a common 112 number is for visitors etc having one common number

I think if a person dials 999, 112, or 911 or any other emergency number they should get through to the "emergency services" operator. Don't do away with numbers just include more

I reckon it would be stupid to stamp out 999. Some people just aren't very bright and it has been taught to most from a young age to use 999. It should always exist in my opinion.

Great idea having another number that's EU wide (should be world wide .. but that's another story) that goes to the same service though.

Back in 2000 when one of the old health boards was bringing in a regional ambulance control centre and taking away the need to call the hospital switch they met with a lot of confusion from members of the public.
One advertisement read "For Ambulance dial 999/112" and this caused great confusion amongst some, certain folk thought they needed to dial a six digit number with the forward slash to be included so thay dropped the 112 so the ad read For Ambulance dial 999".

I think the 999 will remain for a long time because many emergency calls are made when a person is under a lot of stress and possible panic.

The reason 112 was selected instead of 999 which is the most common, was to cut down on children dialling it at random and also drunks or mobiles dialling it from your pocket.

I should also say I think this is a good idea but perhaps just using 911 and having a global number would have been better again

Please also remember that the French and Germans (to name a few) don't have a centralised emergency number - they split it between cops and medical services eg samu and police & notartzt und polizei..

So the EU number is a genuine attempt to get one bloody number that will get anyone in contact with the emergency services no matter whre they are.

Metman, its about ttime you changed to the Euro, pain in the ass for the rest of us, you and Denmark:D

And I'm frankly scared if they change from 999 to 112 abruptly. Panic.

999 was picked as the Emergency number when the old style rotary phones were in use. "9" was the most difficult number to dial, excluding zero, and therefore was the least likely to be dialled by accident. Nowadays that counts for nothing, one number is a easy to dial as the next. 112 was selected so that reapeated accidentally pressing of "1" wouldn't trigger an emergency call.

112 should be the only number advertised as an Emergency number but 999 should still work unannounced in the background for the benefit of the older generation.

That doesn't explain the numbers 112 though. Why not 911?

I was told it was because French and Germans tend not to look at 3 digit numbers and give the three numbers. Instead of "neun neun neun" a German would say "Neunhundert-neunundneunzig". Using "Hundertzwölf" or "Cent-douze" is much more memorable.

Not to be pedantic or heaven forbid annoy you further, but HASSLE is spelled with an LE, not an EL on the end :D

nevertheless 911 should work as well as 112, and 999. For the foreseeable future and forever ( only 112 needs be advertised though).

Why? Because some people will see 911 on TV and think that is the one. YOung kids especially. I remember a story about a 5 year old in England who called the emergancy services when one of her parents was hurt ( somehow, the details escape me). She kept trying 911 - because that is what she saw on TV. The adult did not survive, and may have had if 911 had worked.
