The seventh running of the Fields of Athenry 10k will take place on the traditional date, the 26th of December 2008 at 11:00am.

The race will be held over the same course as last year starting beside the railway line in Athenry and finishing under the Arch in the middle of the town.

Race HQ will be in the sports hall of the Presentation College Athenry.

Just been reading through... The top 50 get a t-shirt and last year 50th place was....39:59! There's my new target!

The field is larger this year though..
Anyone know what it's like? Flat/hilly?

Its relatively flat with no major climbs. A bit of a rise at about 8.5km or so, that you wouldn't even spot on a training run, but catches you a bit in a race.

We're hoping to put a counter [person shouting out race positions] at the 9km mark so that those in with a chance of a tshirt know the score.

Thanks. The counter will make for a fun-filled competitive finish!! Can he switch to counting out times after the first 50 have gone by?!

And I ran for 8km with the guy who got 39:59 and have had to see that shirt on training runs since. I'm thinking of postponing Christmas for a day or two this year so I can go all out for a shirt!

I've done this the last couple of years and it's a great race. Nice way to shake off the cobwebs after all the food of the week before.

Only decent response is to tie his shoelaces together :D

I like the idea of teh counter but glad it's been explained otherwise I would have been quite confused ("ehhh, whats he shouting numbers for?????")

As someone who has heard numbers well above 130 in Ballycotton, it seems the idea it keep counting for about 1 minute after position 50.
After that, the gap would be too large to make up.

Entries have been flying in for this year's race with around 250 entries on hand at time of writing.

It's worth remembering that we've set a limit of 1,000 entries this year to ensure that we can cater safely for everyone during the event and so if you're sure you'd like to take part in this year's race you should get your entry in ASAP.

The organisational team have been beavering away on preparations for the race which we believe will be the biggest and best race we've put on to date.

if you're looking for a counter I can offer myself up. I live in athenry and will be out supporting that morning. You might prefer someone from the athletics club, however if you need, pm me. (i don't follow this forum)

And entries are coming in thick and fast.

We're not sure yet, but it is becoming possible that no entries will be accepted on the day.

We're almost half full, and most of our pre-entries usually arrive in the next two weeks.

If we hit the 1000 runners mark, we're closing off entries.

So if you're hoping to do this race, best to get in now.

I'll post a last minute warning here again [if I get the chance], if entries are about to close.

    Hi all,

Paul Hession will be in attendance at the prizegiving ceremony for the Fields of Athenry 10km.

    Come along and say hello!

One last thing - could all the boardsies running make their presence known to me - so I can put a face to the virtual name!

    Alan

Hi Alan I won't be doing it myself a bit out of my way on Stephens day, that's fantastic about Paul Hession, well done. Also when you register is there a question on the form asking you what club, if so would Boards Ac be allowed to put boards AC as there answer.
    Cheers David

Paul has been very good to us - whenever he can he's there to help.
It's hard to imagine how detailed his schedule is. Last year, he delayed his session by a few hours to hand out medals to every single runner in the kids race, but had to miss the senior race.

Of course - it's not just for AAI clubs.
Locally, we'd always have entrants from triathlon clubs, cycling groups, GAA clubs etc, as well as running groups like HP running club, which aren't AAI affiliated.
