    What is a racist?

For example if you hate one society, you are racist. But what if you hate everyone including your own race, nationality, colour.

Are you still classed as a racist?

It's not just 'hating' the society but then imposing that hate on your opinions and actions.

I think a racist is someone who has a few bad experiences with members of a particular race... and then hates that race in its entirety/blames it for the actions of a small number.

E.g. being driven by two rude black cab drivers leading to hatred of the entire black race - all several hundred million members.

    What is a racist?

A miserable little pile of stereotypes!

Sorry, if I didn't someone else was sure to.

Look at the word: someone who hates a person or peoples simply because of their particular race. I suppose you could extend it to include clinging obviously false stereotypes.

When I was 12 the whole twin-tower thing happened so ever since I've had a slight fear of people in that general area of the world.

    Can't help it.

Racism is a bullsh%t term anyway. You can only be racist if you hate the entire human species. We're all the same race. Human! :pac:

Some stereotypes are true though - the Irish, in general, drink a lot. Germans, in general, are very organised and efficient.

"Can't help it" is no excuse for such ignorance. You CAN help it - by educating yourself and opening up your mind and looking at things from a different perspective. The people who attacked the Twin Towers did so because they were fanatics, not because they were from that "general area of the world". Jeez... Views like that make it ok for anyone with brown skin to be dragged off and searched at airports.

Very reminiscent of the 70s and 80s - "The IRA have committed so many atrocities that I can't help but have a slight fear of the Irish"...

Don't you see? It was the pharmaceutical companies that set it all up - get everyone scared and then whack out the Anxiet-eeze ®

Of course. However there are some patently false stereotypes, e.g. all black people like watermelons and fried chicken, all Jewish people are miserly or otherwise very wealthy, all Asians are experts at mathematics.

There are some stereotypes that are true but people just have to accept that.

Didn't say I hated the race dudess I said I had a fear of them that carried on from when I was a child.

I have no problem with any person in the world FYI,except for the obvious, rapists,murders,close-minded people, people who think global warming is a myth.

So please don't pick me out for something silly I said on an internet forum.

The stereotypes you mentioned: there could be grounds for truth in them (I'm not saying there definitely are, but there could be). However it's when people use the word "all" that things get murky. That's why I made a point of using the phrase "in general" in my last post. Not "all" black people like fried chicken and watermelon... but these seem to be popular foods among poor black communities in the Deep South and there's nothing derogatory about that. These are no doubt popular foods among poor white communities in the Deep South also.
I'd say the Jewish miser thing has historical roots because of "Shylocks" and is not relevant any more. It's fair to say though, there seems to be a huge number of wealthy Jews in the United States, but of course there are poor ones too.

Where did I say you said you hated them? And having a fear of an entire race based on the actions of a few is nearly as bad.

They weren't the first to do it. The Americans started it themselves, in New York, believe it or not.

Ah, in fairness, there is as much an ethos of penny-pinching among Jews as there is of binge-drinknig among Paddies (the ones that aren't pioneers). Thrift (the positive vesion of stinginess) is seen as a positive trait in Israeli (and Dutch, and to a large extent German for that matter) society as is a good mind for business.
... and Arabs - you said you had a fear of them.

She didn't. She used a vague 'that part of the world' which could have referred to New Yorkers, Afghans or people from a particular village 75km North-West of Kandahar. You interpreted it as 'Arabs'. You big racist.

I think the question I should have asked is "Would people consider someone who hated everyone a racist and if not why not? At the end of the day they still hate people not like themselves."
Or what about someone that hates their own race only, can they be classed as a racist?

Didn't want this to turn into a debate about racism being wrong or any other moral principles.

If your hate for someone is down to the colour of their skin or the country they come from, then that is racism.

If you hate them for being a tool, then thats ok.

I'm always interested to know am i racist, or jsut expressing my feelings.

I've had horrible experiences with alot of turkish and spanish nationals...generally with them messing with my girlfriend, or hoping me late at night on my way home.

Geenerally happens on holidays, and im a quiet holidayer, i just go out for drinks and make my way home, im not a lunatic tourist.

But I generally despise people from turkey, spain

Hardly makes me racist though does it, since they have ****ed me over a ridic amount of time

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 46,938 ✭✭✭✭Nodin

    And kinky.
    Don't forget the kinky.

Indeed. Certain areas of the German flim industry are responsible for my phobia regarding persons of severly reduced stature (be they either clenching their fists or snapping on rubber gloves.)

  • Hardly makes me racist though does it, since they have ****ed me over a ridic amount of time

Yes, it does actually. There are scumbags everywhere. People who come here get harrassed and attacked by scumbags and junkies (I work in a language school and a shocking amount of students have trouble) - would you like it if people thought all Irish were like that?

I for one am not a racist ... cos racism is a crime ... and crime is for the blacks!
