The Economist endorses Obama

A heavyweight endorsement for a Democratic candidate in some circles. The Economist has been more and more critical of McCain as the campaign progressed and after the Palin pick it was either going to endorse no one or Obama, the "Populist in chief" as the paper dubbed her isn't exactly the favourite of those of economically liberal leaning. Considering that prior to the presidential campaign McCain was much admired by the paper it shows just how far he's strayed from his old positions over the time period.

Did they endorse Kerry in '04? i can't recall. But i do remember being very surprised when they went for Bush in '00. Their coverage had been favourable to Gore and i thought they were going to pick him. But then they suddenly changed tone and said Bush would be better (obvious more pro-business etc.)

They decided to go for Kerry in '04.
They weren't that keen on him but he wasn't Bush, they were not very impressed with his first 4 years.
