Recruitment firms are a waste of time

That seems to be the view I'm forming. GF is hunting for work at the moment and for every single one of these 'professionals' she meets it's the usual 'I'll have three offers for you next week' and then nothing. The recruitment websites do more for her. She's organised more interviews for herself than these jumped up headhunters. I'm amazed that these businesses manage to stay in business. A good recession might sort them out.

They're not all bad, but I agree, a lot of them are liars.

You still should use them though, as a lot of lazy HR people only use agencies.

In other news, the Pope professes to be of the Roman Catholic faith... ;)

Nah, I'm often amazed by some of the awful recruitment agency stories here, as well as anecdotes from friends... and my own experiences. I have found La Creme to be great though.

Construction recruitment agency KCM are easily THE biggest bunch of cowboys out there ATM.

Its in recessionary times like these that the recruiters will have to earn their keep, they had it far to good for to long and just wanted their cut regardless of what job they f**ked you into. Now they will actually have to work to ensure their clients are happy and should be more responsible in their actions.

Not sure what you mean by that vague comment dade, but yes it is for 'builders' and other highly qualified and experienced construction professionals.

Anything else you need help with?

Of course you're going to get more responses if you actively search rather than wait for an agency to find you a job. They are paid by the companies not by the job-seeker, so they are looking to fill a role, not find a role for someone if you see the distinction I am making.

Hopefully now these cashing in con men will fall victim to natural selection and the majority will go out of business over the next couple of years now that no ones hiring. You can paint up a whithering old donkey, but you can't flog a dead horse, so they wont be able to talk people into bullsh*t jobs anymore, cause there just isn't that much out there any more. Or better yet, just wont be able to waste your time with phone calls and meetings when they just get fu*k all done and don't follow up, even after you take the time to travel to meet them. They really are a bunch of scumbags. Probably the least respected profession in the world of "suits".

Hopefully the one or two decent agencies will be the only ones standing at the end of it all.

I couldn't agree more with you. They promise you the earth and never hear from them again.

When I was made redundent in May I registered with 20 different agencies and only 2 of them kept in contact on a regular basis.

I always found the likes of Irish Jobs and Jobs.ie far more useful. I ended up getting the job I am in now through Irish jobs.

Most agencies are a waste of time, however I don't want to tar them all with the one brush, the 2 who kept in contact and got me interviews were very good.

If i search irishjobs/jobs.ie then i search for employers only. I won't entertain agencies, they are a bunch of wasters, having to go for a meeting with every one of them is a pain in the ass and 9 times out of 10 will result in nothing.

This keeps coming up. "Registering" means f-ck all - you have to just enquire about all the jobs you are interested in on the jobs sites.

Too many jobs are only listed with agencies, so to exclude them just to try and prove some kind of point to yourself is reducing your odds considerably.

Yes, they can be a pain to deal with - but you are not their customer. You are a resource that they want to utilise for their paying customer. Just make sure you use them as a resource for connecting you with a company that you might get a job with.

Meh.... When I was with an agency previously, they rang me fairly regularly with offers. Got me a decent one that had me temping in a hospital for bout 5 months, which I liked.

Then I finished with them, and bout a year later rejoined. They said they'd ring me if anything comes up. That was about 6 months ago at this stage :p

Some day in about 2012, I'll get a phone call, "Hi this is Joanne from Agency X, I have an offer you might be interested in.........."
