GPA announce Gaelic football ’Team of the Year’
    30 October 2008

The Gaelic Players’ Association has revealed the official Opel Gaelic ’Team of the Year’ for Football for 2008.

All-Ireland champions Tyrone boast nine players out of the 15 in all, while beaten finalists Kerry have three representatives. Wexford, Westmeath and Galway also have one member each on the team

GPA Chief Executive, Dessie Farrell, today congratulated the selected players on their achievement, acknowledging those players nominated who didn’t make the cut

"Congratulations to all the winners and in particular to Tyrone who have obviously proven hugely popular champions with the playing body.

"I’d like to also acknowledge the contribution of the nominated players and indeed all the other squad members who didn’t make the awards scheme.

"I know there were several tight battles as every player was fighting to win his own position and this is what makes the scheme unique."

The 2008 Opel Gaelic team of the Year for Football: Anthony Masterson (Wexford); John Keane (Westmeath), Justin McMahon (Tyrone), Conor Gormley (Tyrone); Davy Harte (Tyrone), Philip Jordan (Tyrone), Ryan McMenamin (Tyrone); Darragh Ó Sé (Kerry), Enda McGinley (Tyrone); Brian Dooher (Tyrone), Declan O’Sullivan (Kerry), Joe McMahon (Tyrone); Colm Cooper (Kerry), Seán Cavanagh (Tyrone), Michael Meehan (Galway).

I think that if one county in Ireland couldn't be referred to as having a farcial "team" at the moment, it's Tyrone - same applies with Kilkenny in the hurling this year. I'd like to see you try and validate your comment; I need a laugh.

To be fair they only narrowly beat Kerry. I think 9 players maybe a little strong. Ciaran Donaghy could probably count himself a bit unlucky.

maybe you should read correctly? im referring to this team being a farce, not tyrone. the topic and thread title is a give away to be honest.

Does seem a disproportionate number of Tír Eoghain players. Tyrone were good but not quite that good.

Well, it would help if you didn't write so ambiguously. Anyway, no worries.

I would have included Alan Brogan in the list if i'm to be honest and left out Joe Mc Mahon but hey  don't think people will always agree with their finalised list anyways

Barring Swapping T. O'Se for Dara and putting Marty McGrath there, I'd have no major problems with it.

Cavanagh is positioned correctly, the player of the year, unlike the All Stars!

Joe McMahon was excellent in the QF and Final. He suffered because of his versatility!

Where would you swap Tyrone players?

Like you say Seanie I dont really have a problem with any individual selections, I just dont think Tyrone were that far ahead of the rest that they should dominate this so much.

9 is a lot but I think 7 are dead certs. They also put Cavanagh at full forward which restricted other picks!

Jaysus you'd swear Tyrone had crused through the Championship (a la Killkenny) to get that many. If they were such a perfect team as is suggested, then how did they manage to lose to Down, a Division 3 side?
Having said that, all these All-Stars and spin offs are pointless anyway, the only thing that matters (in Kerry anyway) is the Celtic Cross in your arse pocket.

P.S: I know im from Kerry... but how on earth is Darragh picked ahead of Donaghy? Shur Darragh played like, 3 matches all year, and while he was brilliant... Donaghy was consistantly brilliant. :S Positions i suppose!

Dara makes no sense. Jaysus, there'd be 2/3 ahead of him at least.

    T. O'Se and Donaghy would have been the best Kerry could have hoped for extra. As regards that many Tyrone players, that's the way of these things! If O'Sullivan had goaled near the end it would probably be 7/8 Kerry at least! It's the fickleness of these things!
