    hi

not sure if this is the right place for this thread but anyhow.

recently passed my driving test and will now benefit from being able to bring my car into town at night whenever im there. where is the best place to park excluding the car parks where u pay?

i know it prob depends on where in town ur going to but is there somewhere good to park thats handy for most places in town?

thanks in advance for any help

The one car park that is easy to find space in and cheaper in the evenings is the College of Surgeons. It backs onto the St. Stephen Green shopping centre and always has plenty of space and a pre paid rate in the evenings and is pretty close to much of the nightlife in town. The on road spaces this side of town are hard to get but they do exist. Merrion Square usually has spaces free but it's getting away from places.

Of course, don't forget when you drive you can't drink so maybe hop on the bus and chill out;)

im actually a non-drinker so the bus wont be necessary!

if i was going to use a car park where u have to pay, id prob use fleet street car park. anyone know if its any good? its a handy spot location wise+its 24 hrs so wont have to be rushin back to the car. but have never been in it before.

im more interested in on-street parking and having a paid car park as a backup. so wat streets are the best or are their usually spots available on the quays?

    thanks!

At night, Marlborough Street car park is 6 quid no matter how long you're in.

On-street parking in Dublin CC is not a good idea at weekend nights. Only last Saturday night a friend had 900+ quid done in vandalism damage to his 08 car parking on what he thought was a safe southside street (where he often parks midweek). However, I've parked on both Stephens Green and Merrion Square without bother - so far.

It can be a bit of a bitch getting out of Fleet st after pubs and clubs close as it's one way towards Temple Bar.

sound, thanks a lot. so that wud be as good as any other car park? can you get into and out of it via o'connell street?

ive saved a stupid question til last: how do you avail of the 'overnight' offer - do u just take a ticket as normal going in and when paying it comes up as 6 euro?

    thanks

These isolated cases shouldnt put you off.

I have been parking ON street for years in city center. And not once have i had or seen any problems ever. I try to avoid paying extra for these carparks
As frankly most of them wont pay for damage to your car anyway.
They make dam well sure that you know they are not at fault with signs all over the place.
So my rule is read the on street signs regards clearzones and what not and park on the street. If the area is dodgy then have some cop on and dont park there. If it feels good then do.
I have had 2 cars in the past scratched by other motorists in 2 city mulitstoreys due to the awful tight spaces. And who paid up? Me

Trust your judgement. Dont pay when you dont have to. Sorry for the rant :)

Warning signs in carparks are illegal/invalid in Ireland under tort law, generally if you've paid for parking and send a solicitors letter you'll get a payout for damage caused in the carpark assuming you didn't do it yourself....

...if its in a hotel and you signed your reg on the register they are also 100% liable in law from the off!
