Does anyone know of software similar to google earth where you can just download the maps and don't need an Internet connection to view them? Going traveling and will have my laptop with me. Would be handy to have maps of places I'm going without needing to connect to the internet.

Google Earth can work offline but can only zoom into levels and view what has already been done online. Similar as if its saved in the cache. I don't think it can be made available offline. I'm assuming the memory required qould be way too big for any one unit

I'm not actually being funny. I seriously think that this is a better option than software on the laptop - you don't need to worry about the battery running out. Plus I can't find any free map software that works offline. There's ones for other continents too.

I giggled when I read that first. but seriously if she is travelling around the world the weight of all the maps books would be more than her laptop.

    any links?

    http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/ontheRoad/

select a map product on the drop down on the right and a pop up will open where you can view it online. try out city navigator europe nt 2009

edit: that online thing doesn't seem to be working properkly but the software itself will work offline

also if you buy a gps you get the software with it afair. i'm pretty sure i got a licence for the software with mine but i can't remember for sure because i already had a slightly less than legitimate version of it

This is exactly what I wanted. Not sure about the OP. I wonder do they do a similat version for asia, US, Middle EAst etc so essentially you can get one to cover no matter where you are, even if does take several cds

Other option is Microsoft Streets and Trips, this does include other regions.

Yeah autoroute seems pretty handy but its mainly just europe and like yourself I'd be looking for Aisa, Australia, New Zeland, South Africa etc. I might have a look at the Google Earth plug in if I have the time. Worst case scenario I'll just take screenshots from google maps of cities I'm planning to go to
