Winter Running Motivation

After training and completing a marathon this summer I'm rested and ready for more. However, I'd see myself as a fair weather runner (literally) and I was wondering how others keep themselves motivated to run/train throughout the winter months.

I have Rotterdam in April in mind which means starting an 18 week plan at the start of December. Although I'm looking forward to the running, the idea of training in the dark four nights a week (mid week) doesn't really excite.

Anyone have any thoughts on what gets them out the door on a cold dark winter's evening ?

(I'm guessing many DM vets are in a similar boat).

    Thanks

Aware 10k - First Sat in Dec (Phoenix park)
Bhaa 10k / Jingle Bells 5k - Weekend after (South co. Dublin / Phoenix Park)
Fields of Athenry 10k - Stephens Day
Raheny 5 - End of Jan
As long as you have a target over the winter inside a couple of months away it should keep you ticking over.

I plan this winter to find a pay as you go gym and use it two nights a week with the other 2 sessions being outdoor, one longer run and one short.

Anyone have any thoughts on what gets them out the door on a cold dark winter's evening?

An ipod, base layer top, reflective jacket, if really necessary a pair of gloves too, but most of all knowing that I'll feel much better once I get the run over and done with compared to how I'd feel if I sat in front of the TV for the evening instead.

Once I get out the door I'm OK. Its the thought of going out in the wind, rain and cold is the problem. This week has been very difficult and to be truthful I would have skipped a couple of sessions but for the Boards.ie races coming up. Knowing you have a race to prepare for is good motivation. But the COLD this week -hate it.

Well if this morning is anything to go on, you wont have much of a problem. Great morning for running.

I was in John Buckleys this morning, buying a pair of leggings for the winter ahead, after running in shorts last week I've decided to get the leggings after all. Doing the HSE 4 mile in the marina tomorrow morning..bbbrrrrr!
