great shots.. love 3 & 4. personally, i think the pics would look better if you included the ripples rather then cut them off :)

The third one is the only one which I don't think is absolutely brilliant.
The dye in the water makes for a nice effect.

    good work
are they made with coloured liquids or was the colour added later in PP?
were they long exposures with quick flash or quick exposures with good lighting? I'd like to experiment on that, your work inspires me

    ^^^Loch Ness Monster!?!

    Wow they are really cool!

    If I had to C&C...
I like when there is a hint of colour in the background still water (1 & 2 are maybe a little grey for me, and 5 a little too coloured).

Wow, thanks folks for all the really nice comments.
My set-up is very basic and quiet amateurish actually, but I do like the results (sometimes?). I've posted a picture of the way I do it below. I use my Fujifilm S9500 as the flash sync is better than on my 400D (1/200) and I don't have an external flash at the moment. I've made a simple little desktop studio thingy out of polystyrene and I just use tap water and Goodalls food colouring. As you can see from the picture I drop the drops using a laboratory pipette. After that its all pretty much down to timing and luck.
For every 1 shot I'm happy with there's probably 40-50 that suck. Its great fun though.

Ive got to try this properly, I tried to get pictures of drops before but that was just messing around in the sink really haha. Needless to say, no notable results.

Man I'm highly impressed! I thought that was the work of a pro DSLR and some fancy studio gear... definately going to give this a go in the next few days with my Fuji S6500fd! Power to the Fuji bridge cameras! I'll post the results...!

    Hey TheNorthBank,

I'm giving this a go, but can't seem to get the "crown" effect you got on a few drops... is this a second drop falling and smashing against the one coming up? Or were you using individual drops?

Unfortunately I don't have a dropper so using a sponge to try and get the drop! All a bit hit&miss!

OK here's how it's looking so far...
    drop.jpg

It's a start at least! I don't have a dropper so i currently have some string suspended above, which i dip a cup'ful of coloured water up to, saturate it, and wait for the 2 or 3 drops.

Understandably I'm getting the same drop each time!
Did you force/squeeze the drops out of the dropper? Couple of drops at a go?

I tried splashing a few drops from a sponge and that's giving a much more interesting result, very hit'n miss with the sponge though!

I used a sports cap on a drinks bottle, so you can squeeze the water out, change height, direction and stuff. Dropper would be a lot more controlled though.

Hi Gary, your shots look great, especially if your only starting out. Much better than my early attempts.

The crown effect is the first drop hitting the water initially. I normally get these by accident if I pull the trigger a fraction too soon. This slow motion video shows the exact sequence of a water drop hitting water. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ-AX1G0SmY

Using a piece of string is a great idea if you don't have a dropper. Yes I squeeze the dropper gently each time I want a drop, the tricky bit is getting a double squeeze very quickly so that a second drop (on the way down) collides with the first drop (on its way up) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lLYhkU6tMA8&feature=channel. It just takes a bit of practice, a lot of patience and and an awful lot of luck!

Make sure you post more of your water drops soon.

    WOW! Amazing pictures.
I actually tried something similar myself a few weeks ago. I used a dripping tap into a bowl at the kitchen sink. I was really only messing about and of about 50 shots, 3 or 4 come out ok. I since learned why the pic is so dark due to high speed of the shutter (i'm a bit of a newbie!)
The below was taken with my dads older FUJIFILM FinePix6900. I have since got myself a Canon 1000D and plan to try again using your method.

(do people generally like to see larger images or is my size ok?)

Your lucky so, I often take hundreds and only get a few good ones that I'm really happy with.

I'd personally rather a larger image myself, just so I could see more detail. I like how you've got so low down to this shot btw, look forward to seeing some more.
