Hotmail infected with a virus?

Hi folks,I hope this is the correct forum.

Is it possible for a hotmail account to be infected with some kind of spam-sending virus/malware?

I have two hotmail accounts (a .com and a .co.uk) and the .com one, which I have had ever since I started using the internet (~ten years ago) is constantly getting filled with mail delivery failure notices. About 50-60 per day, all from email addresses which I never heard of.

It isn't happening with my gmailor other hotmail account, and a virus scan on my laptop is showing nothing (up to date avg).

    Cheers,

Yep its quite common, did you use msn on another pc? or are you using the same password for other things? login and change your password.

Easiest way to get someones password is to ask them to register somewhere and with an email and password, using the same password You use for the email used is always a bad idea. I know friends who admitted to me that they always use the same password.

    Cheers for that.

Will changing my password "uninfect" my account?

I don't understand how, or why.

First thing - Change your password.

Secondly, have a look in your sent items. Are there a large number of e-mails going out from the account? If so, it may have been taken over by a spammer (either using automated spamming software or manually (unlikely). automated software may also clear your sent items log though.

Lastly, if you are registering your credentials on another web-site (regardless of how reliable it is), and supply your e-mail address, and a new password, don't use the same password that you use to access your web-based mail account. You're just making life too easy for the spammers.

    *Edit: too slow!*
There is no virus, just someone else using your account.

    Hi guys,
Forgive my ignorance but I tend to receive a lot of junk/spam e mails which may be my own fault as I have registered with different website stupidly using the same password as I use for my e mail accounts.I intend to block these senders and unsubscribe. In cases of unknown e mail senders I try not to open the e mail or file attachments.Anyhow my silly question is,if I suspect an e mail/e mail attachment is malicious/infected by a virus, worm or trojan etc..if I scan my laptop with Windows Defender,AVG or anti spyware where specifically in my laptop do I scan?Ak where is that e mail stored? Is it in the program files in the Microsoft Outlook/Express Files?I do not wish to have to be doing a full scan.Again forgive my ignorance!!
    Ta,

Set your AV to automatically scan your incoming email . I think , though I may be wrong , that OE stores your mail in prog files/inbox.dbx . Most important thing is do not unsubscribe from SPAM email . You are confirming to the spammer that your account is active and you'll be hit by even more of the crap .

The OP's issue was spam being sent from his account , most likely his account was hijacked through the bad practice of using the same password for email and random internet accounts . As suggested earlier , use a disposable account for internet fora and keep your main account for real people .
