Can connect to wifi, get IP, no outgoing connect

    Hi all,

Got an issue, driving me nuts, I need some help troubleshooting.

I'm connecting to wifi, using WEP password, on 4 different PCs no issues.

I have my MacOSX laptop which sees, and appears to connect to, this same wifi network. In fact I even get a DHCP IP address from the router.

However, I cannot get an outgoing connection of any sort on the Mac. Ping fails.

This same Mac connected just earlier today to another wifi network (not WEP), and has often in the past connected to WEP protected networks.

ISP is Eircom broadband. I've tried Open DNS just in case it was a DNS issue.

At this stage, I don't know what to check next - I think I've covered most of the obvious stuff. Any advice appreciated.

    Cheers.

Check for updates, there's usually airport fixes which can sort of those 'weird' errors.

What ip address are you being assigned on the Mac ? Renew the lease and be sure that there isn't any Proxy servers set up in network preferences ?

Have renewed lease until I got a new IP, no jazz.

    Checked proxies, nothing doing.

I cannot update OS, I can't fscking connect!! Grrrr. Also the machine was connected to a different wifi network not more than 6 hours previously.

Thanks anyway - anyone else got ideas?

What ip address has your Mac been assigned ? Is there an entry for the Default Gateway/Router and DNS servers ?

If you know the IP address of another connected machine then try entering these details manually into your Macs network settings.

    Example:

If another machine shows, IP Address = 192.168.1.2 then give your Mac 192.168.1.10.

My guess here is that you need to enter the correct type of WEP key. Perhaps connecting to the other network earlier has confused things ? On the Airport menu top right of the screen select your network and see if it asks for a WEP or WPA key ? If it does then it's lost the one you gave it previously. The router won't give an ip address without there being a valid key first. This applies to any computer not just Macs.

    Thanks for your feedback ZENER.

Looking at this PC (connected), the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 (pretty standard). However, on the Mac, it gets a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0 from DHCP.

It also seems to get a completely incorrect IP address from DHCP - a 169.254.225.253 address. It should be a local 192.168.1.x IP like on this PC.

Setting the IP, subnet and router manually does not give me a connection.

Then you're not connected to the wireless network. More than likely you haven't entered the correct WEP or WPA key.

Select your wireless network from the Airport menu top right of the screen and it will ask for a key to join the network. Give it the correct key and it will work.

Ok, so the moral of the story is:

Eircom Craptopia router plus MacOS plus WEP == ****.

 not the conclusion I'd have drawn.

WEP is poor regardless of ISP or OS in use, it's just so easy to crack.
WPA is easier to configure and more secure - again regardless of ISP or OS in use.

Are you still unable to connect to your base station with the Mac ? I presume you've turned off security and and been able to connect then ?
