Odd iMac HD Space issue

So as the title says I'm having an issue with the remaining space on my hard drive.

I bought an iMac a few years ago second hand. I never had the original OS install discs at the time of purchase. Which was fine as I was aware of this at the time.

The machine came with an 80gb HD installed and and somewhere in the mid 40's was used up. The thing is all the previous users photos, videos, movies etc were deleted. It did come with a rake of software still installed on the HD. High end stuff at that that I thought I'd keep just in case you know...

Well I haven't used any of it really and now I'd like to get this iMac wiped to a state where only what I use/want is on it.

Now there's about 60gb taken up of space on the HD, about 20gb of which I know is mine. But for the life of me I can't figure out where the other 40 odd GB has gone??

If this have of been a windoze machine I'd just reformat the HD and start from scratch but I don't know if I can do something simular here given I don't have any OS discs.

    Anyone have any ideas?

    Spec:
    iMac 1GHz G4
    OS 10.4.11
    768 Ram

Try using WhatSize to figure out where all the space is going:

    The trash is empty, right?

Have a look in the trash folder inside iPhoto if it's installed. If iMovie is there, look for unwanted iMovie projects.

How big is your Home folder?

My advice for Step 1 would be running WhatSize as well. There are a lot of things you can probably afford to lose from the system e.g. additional language you don't require etc. BUT be very very careful what you delete. If in doubt, check here first. Run Whatsize and try to identify what is taking up the bulk of the space, and then maybe drop back to this thread if you are worried about what you might be deleting.
