I'm thinking of giveing myself an early xmas present, and i hear both the PSP and DS are reduced in tesco
so might pick one up at the weekend.
    I'm not a big gamer, i do have a PS2 but i'm looking for something handheld:D.
Which should i go for regards game play, available games, enjoyment. Any advice welcome..

You're asking in the Nintendo forum, so there is a heavy bias here towards the DS.
The question might be more suited to the general Games forum.

For what its worth, DS all the way! I've owned a PSP and sold it again (2 years ago though, so I'm sure the library of games and the console itself have improved since then).

I have a psp. I'd say it's better than the ds.
Final fantasy tactics, wipeout games, tekken multiplayer, god of war chains of olympus, patapon are some very good games that spring to mind.

i'd say if u already have a ps2, then a psp is worthless to you, seeing as its pretty much just a portable ps2.

it all really depends on what type of games you enjoy, both systems have unmissable games. i own a ds and i have to say its easily the best handheld ive ever owned

Cheers for the quick reply's lad's,

Good point about the PSP bieng a portable PS2, but by the same token
    it's a portable PS2 which sound's wicked:cool:. I'll have a stroll around
the shops at the w/end and have a look at the games available and see
    where i stand from there.

I have both, although I've had the DS for longer and I still use it more. I've found that I use the DS more as it's more 'pick up and play' than the PSP (pick up and wait...).

It really comes down to if you want a portable PS2, or a handheld. I suggest looking at the following lists and ask yourself what you'd enjoy more.

    For me it's the DS

PSP....... loads of hacks for it, can use it for a range of dif things and also supports music, movies, pictures.....

DS is just for games essentially, does have alot of good games though.

    I'd still cho-cho-choose the PSP

If I'm after something to pick up and have a quick game, I go with my DS.

Longer, gaming sessions are usually on my PSP.

    Both are essential for traveling.

DS really isn't far behind with the hacks either.

For me the best games are on the DS. It also offers a gaming experience that is different from the main consoles unlike the PSP which just feels like a watered down PS2 with worse controls. Still there's more than enough brilliant games on both to make any purchase worthwhile. Just in my opinion the better games are on the DS. The PSP's hacking potential is fantastic it's just I prefer to play my emulators on the big screen in the living room.

Do you want to be able to use it as a Mp3 player, watch movies, store stuff etc or do you just wanna play games?

There are tones of excellent DS games, tonnes of Dross as well but more than enough excellent stuff.

i had a psp and sold it and now have a ds
the problem i found with the psp i felt it was more for someone who was really into games rather then a handheld that you could just pick up and play for a bit and then put down..
I didn't use the psp very often didn't like the games( although they may have more kind of pick up and play and put down again games now)

The DS i love its handy you can pick it up play it and put it down although i do find it way more addicitve than the psp.. i think i prefer it cause im more into the puzzley kind of games rather than real games if that makes sense..
The games i found for the psp are more games id like to sit at home and play on a proper console for a few hours rather then on a handheld..

Hehe, that's a very good way of putting it. I have both and generally choose the DS over the PSP because the PSP is slower, noisier and feels much more clunky than the DS does. I really have to force myself to pick up the PSP sometimes. It was worth getting for some of the exclusive games on it (Daxter, LocoRoco, FF Tactics) but I own a much larger number and variety of great games for the DS so as far as I'm concerned the DS is a much better handheld in pretty much every way.

Wouldn't even consider any other handheld, gotta be a DS :D

I do have a suggestion though as you are so obviously torn betwee the two...........

Get one now and get the other for Christmas..........you deserve it, don't you??

    lol

ds is for girls. You won't see them producing a pink psp. Real men play god of war on a black psp. ;)

I got the "china dragon DS"

    Theres a dragon PSP too!

I got the DS since I liked the small compact size. It does fit in my pocket, and I like the way it folds over to protect itself if it is in my bag. I also have always preferred nintendo games. And at risk of showing my age I still think it very odd that Sony make consoles, and in the back of my mind they are still the new kid on the block! I played games primarily in the 80's and remember never getting into the playstation, even though I had a PS1 (free), and got a PS2 (cheap).

You have to take into consideration that very few developers outside of Sony are developing games for PSP. However, if you (and a load of other people) buy PSP's, then they'll start churning out quality games again.

Less than a hundred games were released for PSP in the US in 2008. I'd call that a shocking low number. Whilst I couldn't comment on the quality of any of them unless there is a startling turnaround in that figure I would consider it to be on the edge of dying as a game platform.

Custom firmware and loads of homebrew mean that I'll stick with the psp. Plus digital comics is brilliant.

I have both, and the DS is far better for games imho, and for me that is what matters.

So, after all that it seems the DS probably is better.

But homebrew seals the deal for psp for me.
    SONY for life.
