    Hi there,
I'm thinking of heading over to SF for a j1 but I was wondering if there were any good ways for arranging a job beforehand and finding a place to live. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

if you wanna live out in Berkeley you can stay in a frat house (nice and cheap!), here's a post i wrote about it last week: the bart costs about 10 dollars a day and takes about 30 mins to get to market street (abercrombie there hire a load of irish staff each summer)...
berkeley is a very relaxed place and you have the option to work in berkeley or take the bart into san fransisco. you can rent a room in a frat house for the whole summer at about $600 a month that will fit 3 people with some room or 6 people in hawaii/san diego-esq squash! jobs are easy enough to get and SF has one of the highest minimum wages in the US. the twon is full of american students and irsh so you really get the best of both worlds and due to the fact there are americans staying in the frat houses too you really integrate with them all, and you get to catch the start of rush week which is awesome!!

    phew....

Sort your accomodation in Berkeley before you leave. As regards jobs, no worries until you get out there. There are loads of places on Fishermans Wharf hiring students all summer. Sea world is always full of j1ers.

    Thanks guys,
Is Berkeley far out from San Francisco? I've heard it is a good bit out of the way. Also do you mind if I ask what the embassy interview is like as I am in my final year as well.
    Thanks guys!!

its less than half an hour on the train(BART) from downtown SF
also someone said about getting a job in abercrombie..id really try somewhere else unless you get desperate. they will only hire you if you go with their image and look like you could be an abercrombie model. you also have to buy their products and wear them at work and you cant wear them after they go on sale(you have to pay full price for them too) plus 9hours breathing in the abercrombie perfume and the bad lighting wouldnt be nice for anyone. but yeah there are lots of parks, etc that will hire students and you'd probably enjoy it a lot more

lol i'm no model, and you get 50% off your first 3 items and 33% off everything after! obviously there are loads of options but its good to know some place thats hired irish before just in case!

if you end up in berkeley contact any of Alpha Delta Phi, Zeta Beta Tao or Pi Kappa Phi (the only ones i can remember atm) for accomodation and they can sort you out. also other places i know people have worked in SF/Berkeley include Noahs Bagels/ Jupiter Restaurant/ UC Berkeley Bookshop / Moscone Center Security / Blazzing Saddles.
