Does your GAA club allow any other sports the use of it's facilities?

This is a bit of a spill over from a thread that's on the Soccer part of this forum.

I am stating that, GAA clubs, especially in rural areas, tend to be the hub of the community. They also tend to cater for a multitude of sports so although it might be that such and such GAA club got funding for a new clubhouse you can be sure that sports such as, inter alia, soccer, badminton, basketball swimming etc... all benefit from it as well as a host of other community groups such as Youth Clubs, Scouts, Bridge Clubs etc... who would all make representations on behalf of the GAA club which will be included in their submission for the grant.

The grant goes down on paper as a grant to the GAA but really it's a grant to the entire community.

    1. So, what is the name of your local GAA club and does it allow ANY other sport/sports club to use its facilities?

    2. If the answer is NO, has it ever been asked and refused for no valid reason?

Nope, not allowed and rightly so. other clubs have been given money and wasted it. the gaa earn their money and are entitled to keep their grounds private.

also, other clubs would not dare ask anyway, the respect is there for the GAA.

Here's the link to my GAA club's website, plenty of other sports use their facilities.

About five or six years ago, the local soccer team that plays next door to the GAA team asked permission to use the lesser of the two GAA pitches for a few months, as the soccer field was getting dug up for drainage purposes. The club were happy to allow them to use it, but apparently the Leinster council wouldn't allow it. As far as I know, that's the closest my local club has ever come to allowing another major sport use its pitch.

my club allowed one of their coutry pitches, hardly ever used, to be used by the local soccer team. someone at a county board meeting mentioned it and it was stopped by county board edict.

What about halls within the clubs etc...? Do they get used for badminton, indoor soccer, basketball etc...?

suppose it depends on the needs really. in towns and cities, there would be a shortage of land, so all green areas may need to be shared.

in kerry, to be honest, gaa have their own, soccer have their own etc etc. im sure sharing goes on, but its scarce to be honest. it will never happen in my club anyway.

athletics and community games would use the facilities all right, there's no real other sport in the parish! I know the neighbouring town's club have a hall which is used by many sports such as basketball and indoor soccer.
