Taking a year out?

I posted this in the GMIT SU forum too, but something tells me I'm more likely to get a response here!

I'm in 3rd Year in Art & Design, which is a fairly time-intensive course (while we're only timetabled for 9.30-4 Mon-Fri we're fairly regularly expected to stay in as late as 7 or 8pm). Due to other pressures outside of college which are steadily consuming more and more of my time I'm considering taking a year out, returning in 4th Year to finish the degree. Does anyone here know the protocol for doing this, or who to contact? My year was the first to change over to modularisation, which means that none of the tutors (in Cluain Mhuire at least) seem to have a frickin' clue about how it works! I reckon that in theory I can save up the credits I'll have from these three years and then add the last year on whenever suits - is that right?

Frankly it looks like I'll miss so much college time next year it'd be impossible for me to really work at my final year projects & I don't want to waste 4 years on a half-assed qualification... :(

Has anyone here returned to a degree after taking a year out in the middle? How does it affect the whole free fees thing? If we still have free fees next year...

    That site is still going!?

I took a year out before, but it was the Dublin rd campus
I just wrote a letter to the head of admissions explaining that I would be taking a year out and that was it. I was later told that the proper procedure is to talk to the head of the dept. of my course

I don't know anyone who took a year out in the middle of a degree year. But, Im willing to bet that unless you have completed a module/semester/thesis/major project etc. You will have to go back and complete them

AFAIK, registration/fee's are subject to the year. So you may get caught out

Overall, Your best bet is to talk to either the head of Art & Design course, of perhaps someone from admissions
