If you're buying one you can save a few hundred if you keep an eye on the refurb store. At the minute you also get a free printer when you buy a Mac (even refurbs) - you just need to post a couple of things to get the rebate.

Also refurb.me is good for notifying you when a refurb item becomes available.

i have my iMac close to three years now and its running at the same speed as it did when it came out of the box. 20" 2.1Ghz 1.5Gb ram

I run protools on it and have had no issues with it.

the convenience in having it all in one unit and having it look beautiful on your desk get it bonus points also.

picked up my macbook pro this year and have no issues running protools on it either (now that they fixed the compatability with leopard)

both are fully capable, it just comes down to which suits your needs better.

    I second this.

I got my imac earlier this year having sold the previous model. Its the 20" but I love it. Its so compact on the desk, no noisy desktops. I also use the wireless keyboard and wireless mouse making it even more convenient.

    A pleasure to use.

I have one of these and I've found it to be excellent so far. I wouldn't go for the 4GB of RAM and big hard drive from Apple though - it's cheaper to buy these components separately and install them yourself.

They are great machine alright although I had the 2.4 model 24" screen and sold it on as I found the screen too bright and could not turn it down enough. There was also an issue with the even-ness of the light in that it was brighter on one side. This was an issue for me as I used it for graphic design + photography so colours were slightly different depending on their location on the screen. On all other matters I would concur with the above posts.

For the sake of €80 over the base model, I'd opt for the 750 Gig Hard drive from Apple though I'd definitely fit the RAM at home.
