:D Hello there! Im new to all this, so I hope Im doing it right...
I'm 21 after xmas, Iv recently found out that Im being let off from work.. Im slightly depressed as I love my job, but also Im having problems with my boyfriend of 3 years. I feel like I need to get away for awhile after my 21st as Im fed up of being around here and theres very little work around at the moment:mad:..
Im the baby of the family and being a little spoilt I think that I might be homesick ( childish I know )...
Id love to go to Oz but the prospect of being at the far side of the world scares me slightly!
Where is good to go other than Oz, or would you still recommend Oz, Id like to try America or somewhere but the idea of Oz really appeals to me. Also, I love skiing so a ski resort somewhere would be good either, Im just undecided and I'd love if someone could give me some help! Thanks;)

Hi Hen and Welcome to Boards.ie :)

How much of a budget do you have for this trip? Is it 100% holidays or do you intend to look for work?

Thanks the Tanzania trip sounds very interesting Four of a Kind, but I'd be hoping to go with someone I know (being the big baby that I am :)) I was in loads of places in Austria and I really enjoyed it as a holiday but Id just be worried about the work side of things! A good few people I know went to San Fran and that part of the country is somewhere that really interested me also, does any one know what the work is like in America? Are they not having a bit of a recession there at the mo or something?

    What?? A recession?? :D
It's the same most places, lots of people are finding it hard to find work in Aus too. Might be able to sort something out before you go.

hey, i'd definately reccomend america. I spent the summer in cali last year and absolutely loved it. If you dont like the idea of being on the other side of the world to ur family u cud always try the east coats of america. (I know its still pretty far but its only like 1/4 as far as Oz) They love the irish in most places around america so u cud probably set up work before u go or if not i'm sure u'd get offered some over there. I plan on going there alone in the summer and then back for a year in 2010. At 18 i probably wud have been a little scared about going alone, but i'm 21 now and feel like its defo the best option.

    PS. Where bouts in wicklow??

    Hey,
I spent 4 months traveling south east asia, absolutely recommend it!Thailand-Laos-Vietnam-Cambodia-Thailand....and you'll have plenty of money to do you with 4k. You'll be going at a good time too...plenty of backpackers around so you won't be lonely at all....

pretty much everywhere is having economic problems at the moment, so its going to be hard to get work in USA or OZ but there are still jobs like bar work, etc. that you can get if you look around and dont mind minimum wage. not sure how old you are but berkeley is only a few mins from downtown SF on the BART (similar to our DART lol) and thats a big college city (university of california is out there), lots of parties/nightlife, and young people, etc.
another city a lot of people seem to like is san diego..ive never been there but ive heard a lot of good things about it and know a few people who went out on the J1 program to work there for summer. san diego has better weather than san fran(if thats important to you!)
if california is too far away (11hr-12 flight/5000+ miles) you could always head somewhere like new york, which is only 7 1/2hrs flight.
as Penguinssmell said, the americans love the irish (well, most of them) so just use yer charm lol :p:o

Well then, I'd def recommend california like the others did. We did a road trip in August for 3 weeks starting off in Vegas and ending up in San Fran. Amazing part of the world california is and will def go back there. Although my fav spot on the planet would be VEGAS BABY!!!

Just spent three weeks in Canada - the Rockies. Great place and has the skiing too, if you can work in Banff or around there you would make enough to travel after a few months.

Welcome Hen. Sorry to hear you're having some life issues at the moment, but well done on deciding to travel to make the best of it. I've recently booked the following (quoted from a previous post):

Travelling at the end of Nov and wanted to stop in Asia on the way over and back. I first checked with Trailfinders and they quoted me €2,000 with China Air stopping in Thailand and Tai Pei. I then tried USIT and have since booked with them €1,385 to & from Brisbane with stop in Tokyo and Bangkok flying with BA & Qantas.

I found USIT great. I based my trip on a brochure suggestion, got details, left to think about it, mailed them to arrange everything, and after the agent looked into it further, he told me if I left one day earlier, I'd save €218. Which is why I'm leaving on the last day of Nov rather than the first of Dec.

So I reckon choose an area (Asia & South America being excellent & on the way to so many easier places like Oz, NZ, etc.), make a budget, plot a route, and have the time of your life.

I didn't intend going to Thailand, but after talking to a lot of friends, it sounds like one of the most wonderful places in the world. Maybe Thailand, Cambodia, Laos (meant to be really class) and Vietnam??? And if you can, travel alone to meet many, many wonderful ppl and get that feeling of leaving it all behind. Do it Hen, do it!!!

I agree with this 100%. I'm 30 and only started travelling the past 4 years. What I would do to be back in my early 20's again. Make the most of it hen and never look back. Travel to the moon and back. Just to it! :)

If i had 4k to spend id go to indonesia, get a 2 month visa, when it expires fly to singapore or kl and get another one. stay for 3-4 months. you should be able to see a good bit of the country in that space of time. spending money really depends on how much you drink, a good budget would be around €20 a day, that would allow you to live comfortably. the country basically has everything...i was there for 2 months this summer and i felt like it wasnt nearly enough time...cant wait to go back and i think its way better than thailand/laos etc.

Would def recommend SE Asia, €4k would keep you going a good while, i lived it up quite a bit in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand for 2 months on just €5k so if you budget well you could get a good bit longer out of it!!
Amazing countries and easy and safe for solo female travellers too, thats what i found anyway. Totally agree with the idea of getting out of here if you need a break, best way to clear your head and sort things in your own head if you need!!
Best of luck , you'll have a ball wherever you go, and hope all works out at home too!
    Eims

if you don't want to go that far, try Holland, its very easy to find work in amsterdam or rotterdam etc and good pay! thats what i did last year and it was grand. you could try spain or the canary islands and theres good pay in the ski resorts in italian/swiss alps. you could get a 1 year work Visa in Canada or else in the US i think the max you can go for is 3 months but you cant work legaly? im not sure on the whole USA thing but thats the last info i heard on it.
im going on a nice 3 month holiday to southeast asia and then i'll prob go working in amsterdam again. very friendly , safe and easy to make tons of friends! hope this helped you. if you want to know more just pm me
