Just wondering if anyone has an iBook G4 and a WD passport external hard disk and if there are any problems with it. Supposedly they dont work with powerbooks due to lack of usb power. i want a hard disk that don't need a power supply if possible. thnx

i would guess that it will not work.

i tried one with my Powerbook G4 and it would not stay spun up - it would spin up and die, spin and die....constantly.

It wasn't getting enough power. You might be able to use one of the Y cables that plug into 2USBs on the computer-end and a single USB on the device-end to get double the power - I have no idea if it will work, just a thought, but don't base a purchase on that off-chance.

    Hi Breadbin

I can't answer your question for definite but I've had problems with these harddrives even on a new macbook. They just don't seem to get enough power at times. Its gotten to the stage where it might take 20 or so attempts before its even recognised on the desktop. It seems to work better with my mac pro but they really don't seem to have got it right just yet.

Sent mine back there to see if they can do anything about it.

It won't work - The best solution is to get a drive which has a seperate power source.

A friend bought a kit from Komplett and put a 2.5" SATA drive in it himself. The kit has two usb cables one for the data the other supplies the power, the power connector on the second usb cable looks like that of an old Nokia phone charger.

thanks for the replies. i don't think i'll get one. it would have been handy for carrying around but if it won't work its useless. i'd be better off with one i can plug in. thanks

Ive used one with a Powerbook G4 with the y-cable no problem. I presume the iBook would be the same.

The problem is WD does not supply the Y-cable with the Passport series - I have a few from enclosures I got separately but I haven't seen them for sale on their own. The Passport 320GB I have works fine on a previous generation MBP (with a single USB connection) but it does seem a bit particular about the cable you use, refusing to work with some...
