Don't turn 'round, that's a gun in your back

So there I was today working away in the blanchardstown shopping centre, I normally work in the city centre but was out covering for someone. I was supervising one of the lads with my back to the entrance of the shop when someone stuck something in the my back and uttered the following:

Don't turn 'round, that's a gun in your back. I'm here to rob you. Turn around and I'll fire a shot. If you turn around you're a dead man.

It wasn't a voice I recognised, so I ruled out it being a mate or someone I know having a laugh with me. I was puzzled for a moment or two but decided to turn around and see what the story was. It turns out it was a scumbag kid around 13-14 years or age. Without thinking I grabbed him by the shoulder and marched him out of the shop, closely followed by his mate.

Shortly afterwards I was annoyed with myself that I hadn't held him in the shop and called security. It's just not something you joke about with people, particuarly with someone in a shop. I'd have liked to have made a big deal out of it and perhaps have thought him some kind of lesson. Regardless that didn't happen as I simply reacted without thinking and threw him out.

So do you think I'd have been right to hold him in the shop, call security and perhaps even have gotten the cops involved? I'm not asking would I have been within my right, as I believe it would be, but more do you think it would have been the right thing to do, or would anything/nothing come of it?

You should have broken his fingers. He wouldn't do it again then.

I think it would have been the right thing to do.......for all you know if you hadn't of turned around and done what he said, it would have been a real robbery.

Goddamn knackers where would After Hours be without them.

Did he try and bluff it anyway and go "BANG!"?

    Snap.
Phoning the police would have got you nowhere , l would have grabbed him and held his hand to the door frame and slammed it as hard as l could , his word against yours that it wasn't an accident.

    lf l were a man that is.........:o

The only thing that kids like that understand is violence or the threat of it, so you didnt overreact but id say if you had called security they would have found it hilarious.

If you had turned around and puked on him you would have solved the miniature crimewave in training with one foul manly swoop of bodily fluid. Now you will have to go back in time and use some sort of cool laser to kill the twinkle in the ex-con's eye. Or go back in time to make your own self puke at the precise moment at which he tells you not to turn around.
Either way dood, I got your back. Kintaro and the Doc's excellent adventure.

They probably have done this before and at sometime it worked for them.
That said if it was me (and I'm the exception), I would have done some damage.

I had a man stick a gun into my face as part of an attempted robbery. Sadly for him, he, the fool didn't know that I have trained (5/6 days a week) in Martial arts for 15+ years, trained in Close Personal Protection and Krav Maga (an Isralie form of defence and attack).

The fool was unconscious 2 seconds later and disarmed, (handed over to the cops later after I had some time with him).

...But I am the exception. You were brave to turn around. That did take courage. Once you'd seen whom it was, as an ordinary citizen, you would have been in your right to a limited form of self-defence - your life being under threat and all...
...in other words, "I kicked their arses Judge, out of fright and terror!"

100% agreed. Yes you were and yes it did.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

lol the moment i read the sentence on the title, i knew the someone was yanking your chain. Whenever someone tries to describe what they're doing and what will happen if you turn around, you know it's a hoax. Fair play to you for taking the guy on even with the thought that your life was being threatened, i'd have given the kid a bollocking, job or no job i'll not be had like that.

If i where in that situtation i'd proberly have turned around anyway, even if he did have a real gun i'd like to look my killer in the eye before he did it cause the last face i'll see wil be his, and if my beliefs are true and god is real, then i'll hope to come back and haunt that guy into madness, or possibly do a Jason Vohees thing and come back as a zombie psycho killer and hunt him down, but i'm just saying fair play to ya:D

Beating the crap out of him might have just turned the shop into a target for them but no one would hold it against you if you bet him up and down the street the cheeky little ****er.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,859 ✭✭✭✭Sharpshooter

OP , now that it has happened to you and you can speak from experience , would you do the same thing again?
Just from the perspective that if there was a next time it just might be a gun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,457 ✭✭✭giggsy664

If a colleauge told me it was not a gun, I would have spun round and grabbed his hand and bent it back

    Or

Bend my lower right leg backwards at a very high speed. VERY.

Well to be honest sharpshooter I didn't think too much. I just stood there for a second or two and asked myself was this real, and the only way to find that out was to turn around and make a judgement then.

Unfortunately none of my colleagues were looking in my direction. One was out the back doing something and the guy I was supervising was up a ladder taking something down off of a shelf.

Then if there is a next time do yourself a favour and think or it might be the last judgement call you get to make.:)

I am sick to death of little scumbags doing whatever they like, hassling innocent people on the street, smacking them, grabbing their phones, spitting on them. I've seen all these things. They are effectively immune from punishment, because people are
    1. too afraid to confront them because of the threat of reprisals from the scumbags or their buddies and families
    2. not bothered to report it to police because the police are too lazy/scared to go after these punks.

I am also sick of people who dismiss it as irrelevant or minor. These people are often former scumbags. To threaten someone's life as the OP said is a MAJOR crime for which they should go to jail. And that is exactly what they did- they threatened their life.
