wireless connection problem

My neighbour is having a problem with her wireless connection and I can't seem to solve it. I have tried to connect to my own router but no luck there either. The laptop reports a connection to the router and I can access the router's diagnostics page by entering the IP address but neither Firefox or IE will connect to any webpage. I can succussfully ping any address in the diagnostic page. Anyone have any suggestions?

Did you try turning the firewall off on the laptop.. are ie and firefox setup to automatically detect settings?

Firewall is off and both IE and FF are set to autoconfigure.

    Hmmm.

Can you try a nslookup to somewhere like google.com ?

    xxxx>nslookup
    Default Server: xxx
    Address: 10.10.1.1

    Server: xxx
    Address: 10.10.1.1

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: www.l.google.com
    Addresses: 66.102.9.104
    66.102.9.147
    66.102.9.99
    Aliases: www.google.com

or do you get something like

    DNS request timed out.
    timeout was 2 seconds.

    ??

Both routers are excatly the same so I presume so (though I could be wrong). Also the laptop picks up the signal from both routers

well go into the router settings and change the channels they are on, they should not be the same.

Changing channels had no effect. The wireless icon in the system tray shows connectivity as excellent. It never flashes blue though as it usually does when working correctly.

Is your neighbours router the silver 2247 that eircom supply?

if it is, is the "internet" light red or green? what about the dsl light, flashing or constant?

you say you can see the router page, does it say

    dsl : available
    eircom broadband : connected

finally, what part of the country are you in?

    Des,
The router is the silver one alright,
I have the neighbour's laptop in my gaff and its not working on my router either. All router information is saying connection is fine. (and I'm Cork)

have you tried the netsh commands?

    command prompt

    netsh int ip reset reset.txt
    enter
    netsh enter
    dump

    then restart the computer.

somewhere on the router is a place where you can ping out from, and do tracerts.

    try it from there

I haven't tried waht you suggested but I did use the routers diagnostics utility to ping various sites and they all passed. I'm ready to throw my hat at it at this stage :(

    Hey,
Just as an update, I managed to fix the problem by rolling back to SP2. There must be some issues with SP3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,864 ✭✭✭MunsterCycling

Prob a bad install of SP3, Have had it installed for weeks and not had any problems.

Set a restore point yourself then run SP3 again and see if it happens again, will only mean having to rollback.
