    Ladies and gentlemen

I would like to ask all layers and lawyers to make their suggestion about official statement for the photography book. All authors HAVE TO keep all rights.

And also another detail - DeVore would like to use some of the pictures as promotion of the book. And as far as I understood, he would like to use some pictures to promote even SSF. Please, DeVore, correct me if I am wrong, once you have a little more time.

Are you willing to give DeVore permission to use the picture you have submitted to the book in some form? I am thinking about creating some statement that you could sign. To give rights to create banner, to use the picture as a background of SSF logo and so. I am not sure exactly what use could be found, but it would be nice to sort it out before finishing the book.

Please, feel free to take part in this discussion.

Advertising (sorry if this has already been discussed) - a friend of mine owns a guesthouse, and I asked today if we could advertise the book there someway (either printing out a card with details of where to buy, or leaving one of the books around with details of where to buy).

So question 1: has anyone already actively planned a poster or anything?
Question 2: where do we send random passing strangers to buy the book?

    I have no problem anyway.
Would be surprised if someone did have a problem considering
the fact that it would only be used for the benefit of SFF.

The book will be on sale on Blurb.com page. We can only provide direct link to the book, once it is there. Easier link will be from SSF page. Hopefully also from boards.ie home page.

One more note. All pictures (files) submitted to the book will be deleted from designers HDD and from e-mail address that is being used for submitting photos. Therefore it will be directly on you whether you would like to give your pictures to SSF.

Just for clarification that there are no intentions to keep and/or use our pictures.

Agreed, perhaps we can presume that people wont have any problem with the use of their photo for PR unless they object?

I'd personally have no problem with the use of my image for the purposes of publicity / marketing of the charity / book - i'd guess a statement covering non-exclusive licence / usage should allow anyone wanting to do anything further with the image to do so and would cover both Santa Strike Force and the Photographer.

    On the advertising/marketing front,

Idea 1 - in addition to those methods mentioned, i recall pix.ie benefiting from a "Tuesday Technology Push" at one stage where everyone who partook in the event blogged about pix.ie - maybe 50/60 bloggers each writing about pix.ie. Perhaps something similar could happen with the photographers blogs involved or any others on boards that would oblige.

Idea 2 - And thinking of pix.ie - Marcus had a go pink for breast cancer during October theme running (think it may have been initiated last year). Perhaps he would consider a "go Red for the Santa Strike Force" theme for December and give a little screen real estate to the blurb link (for December) - obviously, this if it doesn't conflict with anything that he may have commercially planned for the time of year, or a system release of pix.ie.

Idea 3 - Has there been any approaches to the main media - i wonder would the Irish Times be interested in doing a 2 page spread on the project in the Monday "Gallery" supplement, with a selection of images and reference to a blurb link. Could this be sold to them as an altruistic thing to do? How are media relations on the Santa Strike Force front?

    Just a few thoughts.

If you could create a statement that will be sent to all participants, and if they send it back with agreement, that's it. Just how to formulate it.
DeVore will send us his idea later this week.

    Wonderful ideas!

Nope, I haven't thought about any of that ideas. That would be very nice if we could use PIX officially for "data storage". And publishing pictures in newspaper to raise awareness of the book and SSF would be excellent!

So, who is going to do that? ;)

I also would have no issue with this.

Once the legal mumbo jumbo is ready let me know. I'll sign it and post over to u if needed

Maybe a PM/email sent to each contributor stating that Images submitted to the book may be used for publicity purposes. If no advice to the contrary is received within 7 days it will be assumed that this is acceptable.

no objections here if my photo was wanted for publicity (in fact i'd be very proud and honoured if it was!)

I would really prefer the e-mail. But we have to know what use will be required and also how to formulate the agreement. Therefore I have asked if you have experience with writing such agreement.

And keep your ideas and opinions coming - there MUST be ongoing discussion about the book forever ;)

Spoke to an acquaintance in the legal profession.

First thing to note: This is not legal advice, but merely an opinion.

Apparently there is no real way of securing the rights to the individual pictures to each individual photographer, unless they personally secure copy rights for their own works.

If SSF was a registered charity it might be able to have a copyright disclaimer saying stuff was assigned to SSF on a one off basis, but then you'd need each artist entering into a license agreement with SSF.

By the sounds of things we'll need something along the lines of "nothing in this book can be reproduced without written permission from.... ", and then we leave it up to the assigned person to pass on contact details if someone does want to make use of a pic. That person would need to be able to contact each person if the question arose.

Surely, the above applies to any photography book. Are we not getting our knickers in a twist here for no good reason.

Surely the normal copyright protection notice, seen in any book is sufficient?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Good idea. I'll try to find something.

And what about giving some rights for promoting the book? Any experience with providing picture for such purpose?

    Agreed.

Let's be realistic about this. It's a book of photos put together by some people with a shared interest. Like a club annual etc. We're doing it for a good cause for sure, but that doesn't mean it's going to attract lots of publicity.

By including the photo for the book, we're giving the right to allow it to be viewed publicly within the confines of the book.

IF, and I say IF, any professional agencies (newspapers etc) are interested in this, then whoever has the contact with the newspaper can request from the owner of the image requested that they give permission for it's publication.

Otherwise, there is no issue with copyright except the standard blurb "All rights remain with the authors....unauthorised reproduction...blah blah..."

    No?

ThOnda has been in touch with me directly and asked if Pixie could help out after these suggestions were posted...

In short, the boards.ie community has been very supportive of Pixie and we are delighted to return the favour in whatever way we can...

    We can:
    • Blog about the launch of the book
    • Contact some other bloggers that I know personally and see if they will also post about it
    • Create a skin to support the book which Pixie users can adopt in order to show their support
    • Include some online advertising in the above skin in order to help drive taffic and sales of the book

Please fire over any other suggestions that you think we might be able to help with...

    Marcus
