It's all kicking off in the Congo again

It's all going crazy there again in the last few days. The government forces are withdrawing, and the rebels are thundering their way towards the capital.

There's already about 20,000 people displaced from this round of fighting. There's been about 200,000 displaced from the last round.

If the same patterns of fighting are seen this time.....the armed forces will plough their way through villages, raping women and girls, and spreading HIV and other STIs. They will also impregnate girls, in a country with one of the highest child and maternal mortality rates in the world.

They will kidnap youngsters to join their army.

They will steal scarce food, and they'll steal medical supplies.

This will be a healthcare disaster.

There's 20,000 UN workers in the Congo.

What do we reckon they'll do?

My stomach turns every time this happens :(

Actually I heard the UN sent in gunships, troops and APCs to block the rebel advance towards Goma. I paid attention to this as it is one of the rare cases I've heard of UN peacekeepers getting their hands genuinely dirty.

Really??? The UN finally getting their act together?

betetr late than never. Those african union troops they often use are useless though.

It seems so, they've been supporting the Congolese army. The issued a statement saying that they were "forced to engage" because the rebels threatened a civilian population centre.

There's a ceasefire for the moment, thankfully. Not sure how long it will last.

The French want to send more European troops over there, but of course other UN contries have refused.
