Novice - need to know what are the must haves for a PS3

    Hi,

We've been lucky enough to win a PS3 (yippppeeee), it's set up but we onlt have one controller & 1 game. So I'm looking for some advice on what are the must haves for the PS 3 & ideally, the best place to get them from (happy to shop on-line).

I know we'll need at least 1 more controller...is it worth getting 2 (I have 3 kids), where's the best place & what should I expect to pay?

    Any game recommendations (12's ideally)?

Any other accessories you'd consider a must have?

I am assuming this game will be mostly for the kids. If this is the case, two more controllers would be ideal.

Are your kids interested in soccer? Try Pes 2009 or FIFA 09.

Any of the LEGO series, (LEGO Batman, LEGO Star Wars, LEGO Indiana Jones), Ratchet and Clank, and the soon to be released LittleBigPlanet would also be good for the kids.

Peripheral games like Rock Band or Buzz games may also be worthwhile.

Hope ye enjoy it anyway. (BTW most of the games above would most certainly be worth a gander for adults too.)

You'll need a 2nd controller unless you want a riot. for 12's i'm stumped i'd say sports games, fifa, Pro evo soccer etc. Lego starwars is a good 2 player game.

If you or your kids have an overactive imagination, Little Big Planet will last you... A few years at least.

I'm not too sure about that. The only really stand out part of the game is the level editor and while it is absolutely amazing I think it maybe a bit too complicated for young ones. If you aren't going to invest time in it then, going by the beta you won't get the most out of it since it's very hard to find decent user levels. However I didn't think I was the creative type until I spent all my time with the beta in the level editor :) I'll be getting it for sure but I'd think about it if you aren't going to use it. If you find yourself addicted to making levels it will probably be the best thing ever building levels for the kids to complete.

Take a look at some cheap PSN games too like Crash Team Racing maybe?

I'd recommend the pseye (webcam for ps3), and depending on their age, aqua vita off the playstation store.

And congrats on winning a ps3. Welcome to the community, you luck son of a... :D

And where do you win it? Don't mean to be nosey or anything, just want me a second ps3 :D

OK - Santa may be bringing a few new games + 2 new controllers. Seems like should hold off on the "wheels" and "shooter"

Best (reliable) paces to buy ?? Do I have to stick to sony or are the non branded accssories ok??

Won it on a flucky local competition where I reckoned the odds were good....over & done now so but happy days:D

If they are 12 year old boys then Call of duty 4 they will love.

Buy the games any where smyths, game, xtra vison or import them on the cheap from www.videogamesplus.ca

I would stick with sony controllers any way and i would get 3

Lidl or aldi have HDMI cable next week for i think 8 euro

    Enjoy :D

CoD4 has an ESRB rating of "M", why would it be good for a 12 y/o?

Plus CoD 4 is grittier than most FPS's I've played. Sneaking onto a boat and killing people in their sleep, Seeing through the eyes of an individual in the moments before they are executed, shooting people from a gunship and seeing their hot entrails spilt all over the ground.

Think you answered your own question. yip there all that good stuff !
12 year old boys would love that, i know i would have wet myself with happiness if i had COD4 when i was 12 but i was stuck with tree branches as guns.

your opinion is irrelevant. The OP clearly asked for game recommendations suitable for 12 year olds. I'd tend to trust any ratings board over your half baked reasons.

I tend to do my own thinking rather than have a bunch of people who know nothing about me determine whats right or wrong for me but i guess we are just different that way.

She asked for opinions but mine is irrelevant because its different from yours !! nice reasoning there.

You have no concept of argumentation or fallacies if you think your reasoning stands up. The bolded section is the funniest thing I've read in ages.

    Congrats on that

For the OP, LittleBigPlanet or any of the LEGO games as have previously been mentioned.

So if you got a copy of manhunt 2 you would refuse to play it because the censorship board say its not suitable for you ?

Or would you play it and make up your own mind ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

For Race games, Pure and Motorstorm are very good games.

Alternatively, Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction is a very good game, regardless of the gamers age.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,943 ✭✭✭Burning Eclipse

I've seen footage and have no desire to play any version of that game, suppose that gives you something to judge me on.

My initial point, which you missed entirely, was that you were assuming that L31mr0d didn't think your opinion was valid because it differed from his, whereas it was really because you were recommending a game for ~12 y.o. kids that is patently unsuitable for them.

Well then he should have simply said i don’t agree with your opinion and given his and not said that its irrelevant in such a condescending manner. Not agreeing with an opinion does not make it irrelevant.

The OP seems like a reasonable adult and can easily decide if COD is suitable for the kids in question or not. I don’t think its unsuitable at all COD is fairly tame by gaming standards anything that contains violence will get an M rating.

I still stand by my original statement that 12 year old boys would love COD its up to the parent to decide if there children are mature enough to play it.

Ratchet and Clank: Tools of Destruction, Lego: Stars Wars, LittleBigPlanet(if your kids have an active imagination), Motorstorm and Fifa or PES 09(if your kids are into football).

Also I would recommend a PS Eye which is webcam for the PS3. It comes with a game called Eye Create which lets you take pictures and videos and warp peoples faces and stuff like that. It costs around 40 euro.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

OP, as for where to buy the games and such, most brick and mortar stores are similarly priced, though you may get lucky. Try buying online (www.gamesnash.ie are a good Irish site, www.play.co.uk are also good)

If you have to use regular shops, I would suggest either HMV or Gamestop. They sometimes do deals where you get a free or half-price controller with a game. Argos may be cheap too.

Not if the OP doesn't know much about games and have never played COD4. What part of novice don't you understand?

Yeah 12 year old boys probably also likes to watch porn, drink beer, do more adult stuff too....

OP: you can hook the ps3 up to the internet, connect to the playstation network store and download some demos and try before you buy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,067 ✭✭✭L31mr0d

Also, if you don't fancy buying all your games a great site to rent from is:

    gamesenders.ie

I use them regularly as there is rarely a game I'd ever replay, also new games are released often enough now so you don't have to.

Once you get a game you can hold onto it for as long as you want and there is no late fees. You just send it back and you'll be sent the next game in your queue.

    .

What a hysterical response, all that stuff is against the law and would be damaging for a 12 year old. there's no comparison between beer and COD.

My 13 year old cousin plays COD and Halo 3 all the time and if i arrived up with games like lego which are aimed at 6 to 8 year olds he would laugh at me.

Anyway i give up this is going off topic. OP dont get them COD get them games aimed at 6 to 8 year olds like recomended.

Stop shooting yourself in the foot. Why do you think it is illegal for pre-teens to buy CoD4, as well as cigarettes, alcohol, Porn and 18's movies.

I know of gaming cafes in the states that have been shut down for this very reason, they allowed pre-teens to play Counter Strike.

Ratings have been put in place for a reason. If you choose to waive them that's your right, but you are breaking the law as much as if you where to start buying porn for your child. Don't kid yourself into thinking you are doing otherwise.

I know plenty of people in their 20's that enjoy the Lego series, you've clearly never played any of those games. Does a game have to be rated M to be considered worth playing by you?

Well its not illegal so that would be my first response so my foot is just fine, please grow up and stop using that silly response of trying to link COD4 to showing kids porn its ridiculous.

"For age classifications of games the Irish censor’s office subscribes to ‘PEGI’, a voluntary pan-European age ratings system. Ireland is represented by the Deputy Film Censor on the board of PEGI, but the voluntary system has no legal basis in Irish law".

I take it your in your 20's so did you wait untill you turned 18 to play for example Mortal Kombat? I bet when you stop and think about it you played games that where for "adults".

Also before this gets any weirder ill just point out that Little A asked for PS3 must have's

Thats COD4 which is the best game on the machine

Little A also asked for game recomendations ie the best COD4 !

Little A also said Ideally for 12 year olds but didnt say specifically for a 12 year old. if there is 3 kids in the house they prob are not all 12.

Now can we please drop this if Little A doesnt want it get COD then dont thats all i have to say on the matter now

Yeah some may even be younger.

Hell might as well get Dead Space for 'em too, because I know when I was twelve I really wanted to be an astronaut.

EDIT: In response to the OP, I'd get Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction for 'em, a real blast of a game, nary a drop of blood in sight!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,721 ✭✭✭Otacon

I don't think anyone is arguing with you about how good COD4 is. Sure, it is a great game. However, it is not suitable for anyone aged 15 or under. The OP mentioned the age of 12, in order for us to be a bit more specific in our recommendations. So far, everyone, besides you, has made helpful suggestions with this in mind.

If the OP comes back and says he/she would also like suggestions of more mature games, then knock yourself out.

Wipeout HD. Don't want you downloading ps1 games now do we...?

Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction
One of the most essential exclusive games for the PS3 imo, and is perfectly suitable for that age group.

Wipeout HD is well worth a look. Career mode might be a little hard for kids, but it has a split screen 2 player mode

    Grab a second controller from here;

    Thanks for all that !!!

The kids are all under 12 but I'm ok with them playing the games marked 12's.....15's & 18's are out the of the question. Don't fancy encouraging them to shot, maim, kill, etc. I'll have them on booze and fags before that:D

The Canadian website seems good value so will have a good look and see what to order.

They got Ratchet & Clank with it....had to overcome the integrated error to do with the space on the HDD, so they are enjoying that for the moment.

    Thanks for all the suggestions...
