    Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has heard of the Long Term Illness Scheme?
I'm not elligble for a medical card. But I've been told that there is a scheme I can apply for which would cover my hospital bills related to my long term illness, but I can't find any info on it! Is it a myth? My medication is already covered. Tried the HSE website with no luck.
Anyone have any info on this?

    Thanks

The Long Term Illness Scheme is a specific scheme administered by the HSE covering a list of specific illnesses and conditions. You have to apply to the HSE for assessment- and if successful are issued with a booklet which lists the medication you are on, and you are entitled to these medications and any medical appliances (e.g. if you're diabetic you'd be entitled to a blood glucose monitor etc) free of charge. It does not cover hospital visitations. You are however entitled to Public cover as a public patient in any public hospital. If the delay in getting treatment is excessive- you may qualify for private treatment under another scheme- The National Treatment Purchase Fund.

The Long Term Illness Scheme does not cover hospital stays, doctor or consultant visitations etc- you are expected to fund these yourself. If you are getting medication other than those specified in your personal LTI booklet- you have to pay for them seperately. You can still apply for the EUR100 a month scheme to cover additional medications.

    Hope this helps,

    S.
