MacBook - Is it a warranty job?

    I have a MacBook white, 13", it's about 11 months old.

Anyway, about a month ago a bit of the plastic covering that holds the keyboard broke. To explain better, if you use the trackpad and you are right handed and your palm may rest on the edge of the machine, and so will sit on the covering that contains the trackpad and keyboard. Well, the edge bit just cracked on me last month and I'm wondering if Apple will repair it under their warranty program.

The MacBook was never abused, is minded very carefully and this just happened under normal use.

    Thanks

This sounds like a known Macbook fault and if it's the crack I'm thinking of Apple will repair it under warranty. The same thing happened to me and 2 other people I know and Apple repaired the casing free of charge. And mine just broke again so I'll be trying to get it fixed a second time soon

Oh that's good news. I have it sellotaped together at the moment.

I'm assuming I need to go to my local Apple retailer and they send it away. How long does something like this normally take to get sorted. Being without my beloved MacBook will be painful :(

Before you do that I'd go here, stick in your serial number and see if there's any places near you that do apple repairs under warranty. The place that did mine in Cork repaired the screen and replaced the case in under a week, so it could be quicker than waiting for a shop to send it off, get it back, etc.

    check out this thread:
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055222172

it is fixable by replacing the entire top cover inc keyboard / trackpad... it should be no problem fixing it under warranty... if you're in limerick then yer right CompuB will be your handiest option:

yeah happened me as well, i dropped it off in Mactivate (Blanchardstown, Dublin) took a week to get it repaired. then the replacement i got cracked as well but it was outside warranty at that stage. it is a known fault so you should get it done under warrranty as you says its only 11 months old.

i wonder is it possible to book the machine in for say wednesday week and you drop it in the day they plan to repair it and so minimizing the down time?

best call them and they will let you know of the options

i managed to get mine fixed outside of warranty (mine was 22 months old) apple seem to have added this issue to an extended warranty for some machines - depending on serial number

galmac in galway sorted it for me

hey, that happened to me too!

i rang apple care (3 weeks ago) and i was within my 12 months, so they informed me of my local repair centres. I live in Dublin, so it was Mactivate, Dectek or Typetec. I decided to go with Dectek. They picked it up on a Wednesday, had to order the part and wait, so when I rang on the next Tuesday it was ready. Only prob was that only the collection was free with the warranty - watch out for that!

Good job done, but now dread the crack will reappear in a few months :(

Wait, so you mean they do free collection under warrantee?

Depends on the place. I seem to remember that Mactivate did the same a few years ago for me.

Awful sneeky to draw attention to free collection (in the Dublin area, as that is the local area), but not mention 20 euro charge for delivery back by Dectek though. I found them via a long bus journey instead :)

Ah I getcha. Just wondering because I've just moved to Dublin and between working full-time and not having a good sense of direction it'd be handy to find somewhere that would pick up my mac and deliver it :) I've been putting these repairs off for a stupidly long time.

Yup, CompuB is the place to go in Limerick. Denis or Kieran, try for one of them. Prob only get Kieran these days though.
