Dublin Marathon 2008: mile 17 marker

Finished the marathon yesterday in a sub 3;30 time so I was delighted with my time.

I was running a steady 7m55s per mile pace for the entire run except for mile 17 and 18. Were these marker incorrect? Did anyone else notice?

Mile 17 was a 8m30s for me and then I sped up for mile 18 and ended up running a sub 7min mile!!! There had to be something wrong with the placing of the 17 mile marker.

It was the only marker i didn't see but my combined 2 mile time for 17 + 18 was the end of sub 10min miles.Mile 8 was my best by 36secs from any others.

I never really trust the exact placing of the miles markers in the Dublin marathon - they always seem to be just attached to the nearest lamp post, so they could be out by quite a bit.

17 miles was one of the ones I missed. A couple of the markers I noticed had the mile sprayed on the kerb as well near the post that had the sign on so the spray on the road would have been the real point. Mile 8 was the quickest for me as well, but that was going down Furze Road out of the park so makes a change for that road to result in the quickest time in a race rather than the slowest.

I didn't bother checking my splits every mile. I was splitting every 5k. Trying to keep things steady over that distance is enough in such a long race I think.

Yep, I was 100% that one was wrong. You're right - it was back on track at 18.

    Thank god someone else noticed!

Yep, I noticed too. 17 mile marker was some 30 seconds late! Gave me a minor heart attack

There were 2 of us running the marathon together and both of us noticed the mile marker at mile 17 ... I thought the wheels were starting to come off and we had done a really slow mile! Was delighted to see it back to normal again at mile 18.
