great day yesterday. fine days hunting, weather was grand for a hunt. hounds worked well, terrier put in a good performance on a fox(well fed vixen, who want be dining on any more roosters;)) and i got some new permission of a farmer i met when out hunting. all in all a very good days sport.
seen lots of roosters around so thats a good sign for all you lads heading out on saturday. some of the birds i saw werent in full feather, would they be a late brood of wild birds or farm bred batch?

have to disagree with you there stevo, we found this summer was probally one of the worst summers for broods breeding in the wild! with the amount of rain we got its no wonder our clubs numbers of wild pheasants seem to be down 4rm last yr:( maybe other clubs have found it a good summer for breeding??
we did manage to raise 50 birds and release them but if we didnt dont think there would be a lot of birds around...

i found now that i have cpme across loads of wild clutches. a lot of very ypung birds still aswell. i found that the bad year for the corn did them wonders as by the time the combines came in the were big enough to get out of the way. also the rai didnt come till late this summer so they had the insect life to feed on for the first few weeks. our club released 100 cocks and 25 hens in march fully grown so it seemed to be a for around our areas.

If i told you how much and where they came from id be telling you a lie sniper. the lads on the comitee picked them up. i volunteered myself this year to help with the club but it seems a little bit like they have their own way of doing things. Im only in the club 4 years so i wont ask too much, but when i hear of a meeting i'lbe going and start getting myself involved.

We get ours from Aidan Wogan in Slane. I think he advertises in the ISD.
Adult cocks cost about €15 each and one club I'm in lets out 300 of them between now and January. They are pricey but a lot less hassle than rearing young birds.

I was out with my pointer yesterday afternoon in some stubbles I was surprised; she put up 5 fine looking cocks and a hen. There are a fair few young clutches of birds on the ground aswell but there is plenty of feeding. There seems to be more barley and corn spilt on the ground during harvest than usual, there's also a few crops left to rot in the fields a shame I know but the birds love it. I won't be going out Saturday, Sunday I'm going to give the parish a good scouring hopefully there'll be a few birds left by then.

Was at a gun club meeting last night and the lads who had been out last weekend were saying that there is a lot of big birds around. These were birds that were bought at the end of last season and released.
Things are looking good for Saturday!
