Grounding

I am converting my attic to a room that I want to use for working on PCs. I want to minimise the effects of static electricity. Should I use vinyl flooring or laminate rather than carpet? If possible I would prefer carpet as it would reduce the noise.

How would I go about grounding myself and my workbench? All advice gratefully received.

Vinyl on carpet would be the best of both worlds. To ground yoruself you can simply run some cable from the bench to a radiator or copper pipe in the house.
