Nah! Anything is possible. I'd say it's unlikely though.

Be wary of the 57s and 58s.

Supposedly amongst the most cloned pieces of audio gear, even down to the packaging etc.

I would imagine that a lot of them that turn up for cheap on Ebay are not the real deal. Beware of a bargain.

Try China. Expect to pay between €10 and €30 plus shipping for a close copy. Probably made with a lot of the same parts, however they just don't sound the same.
Music123.com in the US have 58's for $99 plus a $10 rebate and 57's shop soiled for $84. which is around €143 (Cancel the shopping trip to NYNY!)

The ones from China are pretty good alright..

A Mate got one (cannot remember Shure model..) & we did a comparison with a real one.

Everything certainly "looked" the same.. apart from a small type-o inside, on the fake one.

Sounded similar with a quick test.. Would be interesting to see a proper comparison with graphs / stats etc..

Maybe the Chinese have one of these http://blog.lib.umn.edu/ande8399/architecture/replicator.jpg
