    Hi folks,

Im new to this. I have never really taken photos as a pass-time before, i have no training or experience. But i like what i have done when i went out today along the Boyne with a "Casio Exilim 7.2 mp"

Can i post them here for feedback and is it as simple as cutting and pasting them from mt laptop Microsoft office picture manager?

    Thanks.

Well, the easiest way how to post images here is to link them from a web gallery.

    Nope, you couldn't.
Good galleries used here qute often are pix.ie or fllickr.com.

one thing to keep in mind is that the higher the MP... obviosuly the bigger the file size.
so a 7MP photo could take over a mb of space.
ive an 12MP camera and nice big shots can come out of that if i have it on its max.

so my point is that if ur gonna be uploading a few dozen photos, bear it in mind.

Posting a picture here is almost like sending an email. Uploading data to the internet is usually a slow process and if you're uploading pictures directly from your camera you're going to suffer very slow upload times. You could try using the free software by Google called Picasa. It has a simple upload feature where you can publish your pictures to an online gallery and once you have that sorted we can show you how to display them here.

    have a watch of this

Alright fella. Welcome to the photography forum.
I would advise that you use sign up for a free account on Pix.ie
Once you upload your pictures to it, you can click on them & copy the text provided, for posting pictures on a forum. Then just paste that text into your post on here.

    Agree here. Sign up for an account here;

    http://pix.ie/signup and log in

Take the option to upload (option button @ top right of the screen)

Click "Find Photos" and select what pictures you want to publish. Type in the name of an album - this can be anything you want and subsequently you will be able to add more images to this album, so you could have one called 'nature', or 'holidays' or 'halloween', etc... Then set the privacy options and tag it. Click upload. This all happens on one screen and is really easy.

Once uploaded it gives you the option to view the pictures straight away, or you could click the 'Home' option button (top left of the option buttons on top of the screen) - this followed by clicking on the album (which will have aquired one of your photos as its thumbnail.

For boards.ie posts the maximum you should post is something 800 long or wide with a smaller dimension. Pix.ie does this for you - When your album opens, click on the photo that you want to include on the forum. Then click the option 'sizes' to the top right of the photo being displayed.

    You'll see various options along the top something like;

    Extra Small (66x100), Small (106x160), Medium (160x240), Large (333x500), Extra Large (533x800), Very Large (800x1200), Original (1744x2615)

Click on the one that includes 800 in its dimension as its maximum size (or something smaller).

This redisplays your picture in the selected size. Scroll to the bottom of the page and copy the text in the box titled 'Forums'.

Now go back to boards and create a new post with "C&C" somewhere in the title (C&C stands for Comment and Critique generally) - so you might entitle it "Dublin Marathon C&C". Describe your attempt and what you'd like people to comment on if you are trying to ascertain something in particular or state general comments are welcome if that's what you are hoping for.

Paste the text that you copied from the pix.ie page into the message and post your thread.

Then await the eh, glowing criticism which will follow. Remember when posting for C&C that people will be honest in their opinion. You may not necessarily like what they have to say, but try not to get defensive - appreciate that it is ONLY their opinion and take from it what you can. There is a vast amount of people here which will assist over time. The more you tell the forum about the image, the more that you will likely get out of the resulting comments. Allow for some comments being short and even sharp/pointed. The quality of the C&C will vary from person to person and again accept that it is only the individuals opinion. I wouldn't bother arguing if you don't agree :) By all means point out why you don't understand what they are trying to say and they may / are likely to respond back to you.

Welcome to the forum and have fun / participate / play nice.

It's probably best to post individual images into the thread rather than link to a whole gallery.

    That said .....

You seem to have an eye for composition, some of the images have good leading lines & are well balanced. What a lot do lack is a point of interest. They nearly all have blown highlights & lack contrast & seem under saturated.

Overall it's a good starting point. You have an enjoyable journey ahead in learning about how to improve those images. Have fun.

Thanks, i appriciate the advice. If you have time could you explain or give advice on the underlined above?

    Hiya, and welcome along :)

What Cabansail means by blown highlights is that the white bits in your images (the sky) are too white - they've lost the detail they could have had like clouds etc.

Lacking contrast means that the difference between the darker areas and the lighter areas of your shots could be more - they're a little 'flat' in their brightness overall.

and undersaturated means they don't have much colour information.

All this above seems like a lot, but if you can get a few basic pointers to post processing images I really think you'd be away :) As has been said, you have a good eye for composition. You just need to give your shots a little more 'oomph' :)

Blown highlights: over exposed areas that appear as blotches of white. The sensor is fully saturated with light and cuts off the image at white. Shooting directly at the sun wil cause this.

high contrast: distinct brightness differences between dark and bright areas
low contrast images generally look flat, under saturated colours often look flat because of the low contrast

By the way - don't be discouraged - water and sky and dark wood in the one shot are pretty damn hard to get right!

See the high dynamic range thread for example.
    http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055406077

Its one of the big basic things to get right in photography.

Here's an example of what could be done.
    attachment.php?attachmentid=65556&stc=1&d=1225146612
The highlights (white bits) are lost and it would be difficult to restore anything there but you can increase the contrast a bit and make it look less flat. The colours and details stand out more. There are more distinct tones of light and dark separating them.
