Winter Jacket - Please Recommend

Folks, I need a recommendation of a good winter jacket for longer spins. I require something that is comfy, breathable, warm and windproof.

I made the mistake of heading out yesterday, and got caught up by Sally Gap wearing cycling top and base layer under an Altura Nevis rainjacket. The sweat from my body had nowhere to go, so I froze inside my jackets in very high winds. The most miserable and uncomfortable cycle ever.

I dont want this mistake to happen again.

    Thanks in advance.

If you have the money I have found no better jacket than an Assos AirJack 851. Mega expensive but worth it if you ride a lot in terrible weather.

If you are part of a club, pick up one of the clubs Thermal Jackets. My MAD one has seen me through many a terrible day on the bike. And at about €80 a tad cheaper than the Assos :)

I got this berghaus in chainreactioncycles.com, but they only seen to have small sizes left ( i'm XL)
Anyway I think its the biz , the bottom flap folds up ino the jacket if you want to wear it out normally and its got reflective piping on it, plus its warm , windproof etc

I'd buy another if there were any left cause it can be hard to get a good one that fits etc.

I have an airblock jacket and its super comfortable and warm, you would nearly wear it to mass. looks like they put up the prices of the jacket now that winter is here. I got mine in the summer for €160

    +1 on the Assos 851

Worth the extra few euro, pockets are huge, amazing fit and is so breathable. Recommended.

Thanks folks. Had been thinking of that jacket (Assos Airblock). Good to get a recommendation.

Picked up mine in the states a couple of years back and couldnt recommended it more. One thing of note - if ordering online have a good look at sizing - I typically wear a medium t-shirt size and have an XL assos jacket.

I'd be in a similar boat and have noticed sizing a tad on the snug side with most gear since I started back into proper cycling a few months ago. It's probably a good idea to go out to your local shop and try on a few jackets to get the right size then maybe go online and order it if you want to save a few euro.

I usually wear a medium in cycling gear and have a medium in the Assos jacket and it is very 'form fitting'.

All the Assos stuff seems to be like that.

Cycle Superstore in Tallaght have a reasonable range of Assos stuff.

I tried on a few of the jackets, but found the Bicycle Line stuff slightly more comfortable (and about 2/3 the price). Having spanked my wallet on some Assos bib tights I was looking for savings!

Sizing was interesting - I wouldn't buy over the internet without trying on first.

    Anybody try the Lusso HT60.

Seems to get good reviews for a waterproof.....and lets face it everybody needs one in this country

I bought an Assos Airjacket 851 also. Cannot say enough about it, brilliant. I'm a size M, but L fits perfectly. I got it here http://www.totalcycling.com/index.php/product/apparel_shoes/jackets/airjacket_851_yellow.html

Can't get better than the Assos gear, got the jacket and you don't even have to wear a huge amount of clothing underneath. Would have liked to buy the leggings but the expense is quite alot on the jacket alone. Next year will buy the leggings.

And yes size, am a L and had to get XL.

wore the assos airblock today for the first time an i was super warm. Had base layer and a jersey on underneath which was too much. A base layer and jacket would have been better

From some of the reviews i've read the Assos tights are pipped by the Santini Roubaix TwistGel Bibshorts, however, that being said i'm going to purchase the 2009 Assos winter LL. tights once released for sale in November.

Today I wore Assos bib tights, a thermal t base layer and a windproof (Bicycle Line) jacket and was perfect temp despite rain and wind. Kept the thin waterproof jacket/mac (blorg tip) in the back pocket.

I think my tights (size L) are a bit big (I'm 6ft with short legs), as I have to adjust them carefully to avoid an irritating gathering behind the left knee. Size M seemed too small when I tried them on in the shop.

    Just the thread i needed!
I was looking at winter jackets in cycleways and they have the Gore Phantom II
    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/Cycle/7/Gore_Phantom_Windproof_Jacket/5360030077/

Does anyone have one of them?

Also looked at the Pearl Izumi
    http://www.nextag.com/pearl-izumi-vagabond-jacket/compare-html

The Gore one is alot more expensive but would probably keep me alot warmer.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

Was up in the superstore yesterday trying on the airjack and the airblock tights.

Jesus- they're sooooo comfortable! I felt like I was wrapped in a duvet!

Is there a difference between the Airblock 851 and the Airjack 851 jackets?

As far as I can tell, no. I think confusion arises because the fabric at the front of the jacket is called Airblock and some retailers mislabel the jacket because of the similarity.

My initial thought was that the Airblock was last year's model and the airjack is this years. I've been looking around online and I can't find much difference in price for the "Airjack" but the "Airblock" seems to be a good bit cheaper - 30-40 yoyos.

I tried emailing one of the sites with the "Airblock" listing a few days ago but haven't heard anything back.

Looking at the images though I can't see any difference.

The cost of the jacket on wiggle/crc (airjack) is pretty much the same as in the cycle robberystore so i might just head up there and buy one.

If it's any use I bought one from JE James in the UK. It was listed on the site as "Airblock 851" and the shops label on the box said Airblock too. However the Assos label on the box described it as an "AirJack 851". JE James is still pretty cheap for a lot of Assos stuff.

Sound - must be the same, so. Thanks

If you are tall and broad chested, I have a XXL Boards Winter jacket that is way too big for me.
I have a 46" chest and it is too big for me.

So you will get a good deal on it from me, as it is of no use at all.
Otherwise it seems like a fine jacket.

you have to realise that different people need different temperatures to feel comfortable, i like to be colder than most. so i find that in the coldest weather a thermal and cycling top are fine if it rains i have a cagool made out of a material called pertex,

Cheers ROK ON but Im actually a 5ft 3" female so don't think it will fit me!!!
I definitely don't want to be cold so need to find out what type of jacket would be best for road cycling at this time of year and where is a good place to get them.

I bought a medium size Cannondale Le Carbon Max Jacket 9M300 2009 £124.99. It fits nicely. It is very red.

    Pockets, pockets, pockets
Each of the side hand pockets is a double pocket, access from outside, and also another pocket with access on the inside.
A nice little sleeve pocket on the left forearm.
    Three back pockets.

Not much back reflection, just two short strips about 1" x 6" on each side near the waist.

The sleeves are very long, which is good. Also the waist has a plastic like band around the inside which seals out the cold.

It is. For the weather I'm cycling in at the moment (dry, about 5C with a little wind), it is absolutely ideal. Unique too. Worth the money. Cheers guys!
