    Folks,

Sorry this is embarrassing i should know the answer but just checking before i fly off tonight.

I want to take my Lowepro AW 3 and Canon Camera on holidays and i intend taking it onboard as hand luggage. If i take this onboard does that then prevent me from taking on any other hand luggage as i think rules say one item of hand luggage?

    I am flying Air Lingus.

Yep, just the one bag I'm afraid! They may not notice that you have 2, and you'll get away with it, but that becomes a problem if you can't get back on the other side ;)

Plus the bag you bring on can only weigh 6 kilos! They do state that you can bring "additional small items" such as cameras on board as well. However if you check-in online, you might (and in probability will) be able to bring more than one bag on, as the security staff don't seem to give a hoot and the staff checking your boarding cards most times don't care either.

Also, if you're travelling to the UK, remember that some airports over there do still enforce the one bag rule and then very strictly indeed (at least I think it's still in place at some airports over there).

Yeah, flying out of London Stansted can be a bit of a nightmare.

When flying with Ryanair, I do an online check-in.
Then, if I have two bags, I never get questioned at the departure gate.

It can indeed and they weigh your bags too. If you're over the ten kilo limit set by Ryanair (for example) they make you check the bag in, which involves more queueing and of course the added expense of having to check in.

A full list of UK airports which no longer enforce the one bag rule is here. Stansted is one of them, still doesn't mean the security staff won't be weighing your bags though...

same here... just back from flying with Ryanair, did online check in and knowbody batted an eyelid at our carry on.

I was shocked at the size of somepeople's bags, it seem to be 2 bags in an overheard compartment.. instead of about 3 or four lol so im sure you'll be fine!

Actually, come to think of it, coming out of JFK, they were weighing random bags and enforcing the 1 bag rule.

have flown numerous times since the start of the year with hand luggage and a camera bag, from jfk, boston, london, spain and never had trouble wit it. Most airlines seem to allow one piece of hand luggage and one other small item like a camera bag, laptop bag, plastic bag with food etc.

EI will allow you to have one item of cabin baggage (6KG,rarely weighed out of Dublin) and 'additional personal items'. This includes handbags, laptops, small suitcarriers. Camera bag would be classed as a handbag/vanity bag. Many pax take their cameras onboard, you can often get nice shots enroute and on landing.

What I've tended to do is put my camera bag into a much bigger holdall, saves having to worry about some jobsworth making a name for himself and not as conspicuous a target for the the light fingered brigade.

Did that in Heathrow and failed the luggage size check at Security. They sent me back to check the bag in so I wound up taking the camera out and checking the other hold in. The airline were very bemused to see me back. It failed by about 1cm, would have fitted only for the camera bag.

Not impressed as was late into Dublin and really would have preferred not to have to hang around collecting checked in luggage that weighed about 3kg.
