Why dont you wait a few weeks and get a Humax box with PVR in the North?

    A Sky+ box won't record/playback without a viewing card and active subscription.

The Lidl and similar bad value. The Freesat PVR is the only sensible easy to use non-Subscription route.

If you want Sky pay channels (e.g. sport) then Sky+ or ideally SkyHD is best route.

All HD PVRs will work fine with non-HD channels and non-HD sets, even old CRT with no HDMI.
