PC won't boot - 6 beeps

My brother has an old-ish Dell 3100. This morning when he turned it nothing happened.

I had a look; the screen stayed blank and just omitted 6 long beeps. I was under the impression that 6 long beeps was something to do with keyboard or something?? Surely that's not causing the problem?? Anyway, every time you boot you just get a completely black screen and the 6 beeps.

    Any thoughts on what's wrong??

    Thanks in advance :D

if it happened to me (like it has once or twenty times)
I assume he didnt put in any new hardware ?
could open it up and make sure all the PCI cards are plugged in correctly ?

used to have a 3100 if i remember correctly they also have a set of diagnostic lights ABCD which might also give an indication of a problem.

    Edit: see here http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ws450/en/ug/advanced.htm
check the lights on the back and check the chart on that page.

The beeps on boot are normally faulty or miss seated memory. Reseat the ram and try again. If it is memory you will see an amber amber green green on the diag lights.
