My Vista PC is driving me nuts, it won't retain my resolution settings, no matter what I do, and if I move icons around, when I restart they revert to the top left of the screen. Any ideas on what I can do?

Try disabling the Align To Grid option on the desktop context menu. (right click> View)

Really? All that does, IMHO, is line up icons as you move them. If you turn it off, you can mess up their alignment, but it shouldn't have any effect on the positioning of icons (and certainly not on the resolution).

    I'll try it anyway

Are you connecting to it from another machine with remote desktop by any chance? I find that if you connect with RDP from a machine that has a different screen resolution, it rearranges the icons so suit the smaller resolution each time the RDP client connects.

If there's an Auto Arrange option, untick it.
