A friend of mine recently bought one of these,a 1973 3litre auto but the auto box is appparently knackered(pending investigation),anyone have any idea where one one could be picked up,or what else would fit in its place if he needs one?Or is it like the quest for the holy grail:p:D
    Thanks in advance:)

Its a Borg Warner 35 which was fitted to loads of cars in the late '60s/early '70s. The ratios will be different for each make/model so a bit of research will be needed to figure out what'll suit. It was fitted to Rover/Jaguar/Triumph/Rootes Group/Ford cars etc so there are lots of parts available in the UK.

I'm not sure that it'll be easy to get a replacement secondhand that'd be worth the hassle of transport from the UK - I doubt that one'll surface here but in most cases if the car is scrap the auto box won't be pristine.

As its a relatively common box you could get it fixed up by a gearbox specialist here or your friend could have a go himself with a recon kit.

BTW conversion to manual would be more hassle in my opinion.

Thanks for that 245,good to hear that is a common box, makes things a little bit easier.Hopefully its nothing more than low oil or a broken selector cable...things are never that easy are they though:rolleyes:!!

These people have a reasonable selection of parts:

although a generic auto box specialist may have more detailed knowledge if you need some over the phone diagnosis.

I like dealing with these people:

However the fall in the value of Sterling has made buying from the UK a better option (CVI have started charging a lot for postage)

Note that the Amazon uses different ratios in the auto box.

    Edit:

its amazing what a fluid change and filter clean will do for an autobox...

Practical Classics has a feature on the overhaul of a BW35 box - its in the January edition and is in the shops now. Not saying that they're always fully correct but it'll give some insight

Its probably the better option - especially with overdrive - not sure about the 164 but the Amazon has a differently sized transmission tunnel for autos and manuals.

I've had mixed results with secondhand parts from some highly regarded Volvo specialists in the UK.

Incidentally,he has an rear axle off a 92 volvo, not sure from what version, and he said the speedo is electrically driven from it,is that right.

That'd be right - I'm not sure what year the speedo drive moved from the gearbox to the axle (my Haynes manual just says 'later models') but I suspect that it happened in 1984/5 with the introduction of the M47 gearbox. Is he going to fit a later gearbox as well? Bear in mind that the engines were slanted in the 200 series but upright in the 100 series - some mods will be required for the M45/46/47 gearboxes to fit the B30...

Its in the centre as far as I know.
