outside mail going into spam in myzone

I've just noticed that some mail from outside college is going into spam in myzone, the TCD google client (in fact I've never had one piece of real spam to worry about!). I've looked hard for an option to reduce or turn off the spam protection. But I can't find any.
Anybody else met this problem and found a solution ?

theres no way to turn off the spam filter
You can add the contacts to your address book, so emails from them dont show up in spam...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭YogiBoy

also what happens when you leave college... can you keep on the inbox, or somehow transform it into an ordinary google account ?

That works. But oddly enough doesn't work for emails from mailing lists.

You keep your tcd.ie myzone account. The mail is shifted to a different server though.

My acceptance letter from my college in Cambridge went into my spam folder and I didn't notice. Almost ended up costing me accomodation here and gave me a fair bit of hassle. Suffice to say I just checked it every day from thereon in (which was annoying, as I also got about 100 actual spam e-mails a day). The spam filter is just ****e.

An email from IRCSET about the funding application deadline went into spam for me. Awh well.

    @jmccrohan:

It is annoying that you cannot turn it off totally and forward everything.

So your email changes to username@alumni.tcd.ie?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Nope, its just an internal thing. Looking at the servers an email gets passed through, alumni.tcd.ie is the final one.

I figure give it two or three years and we're gonna start seeing some really entertaining usernames creeping into the system thanks to common names (smithj332 kinda thing :P)

it's quite possibly the most overzealous spam filter I've ever seen, i've even had mail relating to my course being nuked. nothing in my spam folder is actually spam. it's ridiculous

the main thing would be not to use it as your main email, particularly for the net so it doesn't get added to any mailing lists (which frankly you shouldn't be anyway). that should prevent you being inundated with spam and it should be fairly easy to keep a track of everything that gets tossed in there.

I'm so tired of the over active spam filter. I have all my myzone emails being forwarded to my normal gmail account, but it only forwards messages that go to my inbox, so I missed a fair few legitimate emails that had ended up in spam. I actually haven't gotten any real spam into myzone so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,889 ✭✭✭tolosenc

    Facebook heads there too.

+1 on the actual course emails falling foul of the spam barrier.

Is it just me, or would other people prefer username@alumni.tcd.ie after graduation?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 17,163 ✭✭✭✭Boston

Just you. The point is that you don't suddenly loose the email you've been using for the last 4 years.

I've got genuine spam, but it's from signing up to fora.. I don't know which one but it's bloody annoying. It got my full name too.

No, I think it's cool you get to keep the @tcd address.

We should be given an option not to use Google IMO. There are some excellent email servers out there:
    - SquirrelMail (as used by the CompSci department)
    - RoundCube email project (excellent open source project with massive potential -- I predict this will kick gmail in the balls over the next 36 months)
    - Horde
    - etc.

Why we have locked ourselves into a complicated agreement with google is beyond me. Not to mention whatever the hell (statistical analysis, etc.) they do to our emails.

Google are as bad as Microsoft at this stage IMO.

This is a university and we should be using/promoting open source software as much as possible. Given the numerous complaints over "myzone", it's quite apparent that students should be given more control/choice over how their email is handled.

True. Have you tried to understand it?

Apparent to whom? There are practical issues with supporting multiple webmail applications. That said, mymail is still in operation. In fact staff are not permitted to use myzone. Likely due to accountability.

Hey Dudes... I think I've found a solution that removes the spam filter
You go to settings, then filters...
enter in the TO box just your own email address e.g. dude@tcd.ie
    next
mark Never send it to Spam
"Also apply filter to 134 conversations below" (that is how much I missed... all legit).
    Sin e !

Mymail doesn't work for me. I'd prefer to use mymail than this "myzone" thing. At least then I'd know my internal mails stay inside the black railings.

I guess there's silver lining to every cloud -- people are now much more conscious about encrypting their private/confidential emails now that google have been allowed on campus.

What's good enough for students isn't good enough for staff eh? Now where have I come across this before...

Is there any way you can change your email name?

Cos it's spelt differently to my actual name. Usually it's your last name with the first letter of your first name then a number if there's another person with the same name. eg. smithj2123 @ tcd.ie.

Now I have a very very unusual second name. It's mcg*****, so obviously it would be mcg****c @ tcd.ie but they've put a c instead of a g there; mcc***c @ tcd.ie and they've dropped the last letter of my second name so it looks absolutely ridiculous. I told the people at the registration desk the first day, she was like, oh well that's the way the computer has done it and there's probably loads of other people with the same surname as me so that's why. I literally laughed in her face and said I very much doubt it and I'd like you to find me one person in Dublin with the same second name. Went off anyways and signed in, my name was spelled wrong on the system.

Any ideas if I can get it changed? :(

For engineers it doesn't matter which address you use. Both are forwarded to myzone.

if it's wrong for the email, is it wrong then for the rest of your entries in the various systems?

if it it's only the email i'd say leave it. it'll be more hassle than it's worth having to get your new one reassigned to all the mailing lists. it's just an identifier to contact you at the end of the day, it's not meant to mean anything, just symbolic. and for that matter you wouldn't be the only one where they messed up the surname in it.

but if it's wrong elsewhere though then my advice would be to hassle the sh*t out of them until they sort it out. it'd be a fair oul' pisser to get a degree in the wrong name, and could potentially cause a few problems down the line in the future. i.e. potential employers wanting to do a check on your degree etc. and then administrators not being able to find you on the system, that type of thing can get messy down the line.

in other Universities they make you check to ensure all your details are correct before they enter you into the system. we may be 49th in the world academically but when it comes to the oul administration at times Trinity is more like a third world institution.

I have an unusual surname that's eight-letters long. My TCD email address was thus e1234567@tcd.ie. I casually asked would it be possible to drop the e and just have my surname @tcd.ie instead, as I'm sure it's never been taken before. They said no, that they only change them if there's a spelling error or something similar.

This is a round-about way for me to say I got the impression that it's not hard to change the spelling, so it may not be all that much hassle.

If they change it for you then they would be under pressure to change for every jim, bob and sally.

I understand that. I dont really care, but no harm in asking tho.

You can however get your surname as your email address if you have your first letter of your first name the same as the last letter of your 8 letter long surname. :)

Well it's right on my student card, my letters from TCD but wrong in my mail account...

I agree that this is an amazing webmail client, but saying it will beat gMail is a massive overstretch of the imagination. Firstly, it will rely on 3rd parties installing and running the software on their servers. Secondly, very few 3rd party email providers give half as much storage as gmail. And unless they come up with a really easy method to copy all your old mails from the likes of gmail it'll flop.

Nope, not user friendly enough, it's the exact reason your average user took months to get used to mymail back in the day. I did like mymail myself however, but that's because I'm weird.
