Following on from the "Why cant you volunteer abroad for free" thread I've got a question of my own.

We(School Team) are going to Ghana in easter to build houses with Habitat for Humanity Ireland. Thing is, for the team of 16+4 Teachers we need to raise 40K + Our own contributions of 500 each. Not an easy feat. We were meant to be bucket collecting today but as the Chief Super's office never responded(or has but too late) we were forced to cancel:( There are a group of circa 50 students running tommorow in the Lifestyle/Addidas Family run but the teachers made it very clear we need to do more over mid term.

So, we go back on the 3rd, what can we plan, organise and carry out between now and then?

    Thanks,
    High School Habitat Team 08/09.

You're leaving it fairly late there!
Loads of school do this. Give the first years sponsorship cards and get them to something. I know it's not going to happen in mid term but I've found those young ones are very enthusiastic. Once you get the momentum going the money'll fly in. But you have to get the people behind you. You need to promote the hell out of this.
Bag packing in supermarkets is also great. Although, unless you know someone you'll have to wait for ages for that.
If your students are musical, maybe they could put on a show? Or a table quiz, or céilí?

I know at least 6 schools who do this so it's definitely possible. Maybe mid term could be spent organising this stuff?

Dunnes Stores in Rathmines regularly have people packing bags for charities, sports clubs, scouts, etc - that's near to Rathgar (if it's the right High School that i'm thinking of).

Lethal Bullet, might i suggest that you forego the VW Campervan for a while and pay the 500e yourself? That way any money you'll be asking ppl for pays for the materials and the like, not your flight. I'm not having a go at you, it's just that whatever you do to fundraise you will be in effect asking people to pay for your school tour to a sunny country while we're all mired in a recession here. :)

Wasnt clear:p I have paid the 500 myself. I have to fundraise another 2K:eek:

We're booked for SuperValue Churchtown for January[soonest opening] but I never thought of Dunnes in rathmines. I'll get on that. Tesco Dundrum weren;t very helpful:(

Good luck - people respond positively to charities collecting there, especially if the ppl are wearing t-shirts that are easy to read and have some info on them, eg, instead of just a logo and 'abc' having 'andy's big charity - helping orphaned penguins in Holland'. Uniforms seem to help also, I've seen the girl guides and kids in sports clubs tracksuits get a good response.

I've never seen charity bag packers in the Tesco in Rathmines, or the new Superquinn in Ranelagh (bit small though), but that doesn't mean they don't do it.

If I were to come across your group when i was doing my shopping i know i'd throw much more money into the bucket if the person packing my bags were telling me about how "we're fundraising for *insert good thing you'll be building*, paying for our own flights, etc, this money will be for blah, blah".

Lethal_Bullet - sorry if i came across as a little brusque in my post, i've just had a lot of people in the last 2 years at me fundraising for trips that are better than any holiday i've been on recently, and so have a short fuse about it.
