Apart from messing around with a tennis racquet as a kid, I've never played tennis. I wouldn't mind joining a club and learning to play tennis but I'm a bit unsure.

Firstly, I'm in my early 30s and would obviously be streets behind people who've played for years. I also don't know anyone who plays tennis so I wouldn't have anyone to play with. Would these two factors be stumbling blocks for me?

Your best bet is to go down to your local Tennis club and see if they have a Club night which as far as I know most clubs do and then use it as a way of spotting equal talent as yourself. IMO that would be the easiest solution
