Snooping Parents

Ex-police sniffer dogs have found a new lease in life for their super-sensitive noses - smelling out drugs in teenagers' bedrooms.

American parents can rent a dog and handler for £125 an hour from Sniff Dogs, a firm operating in New Jersey and Ohio, to check out their home for marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine and heroin.

The firm's five Labrador sniffer dogs can detect illegal drugs or the residue of them on clothes or surfaces even days later, and sniff out marijuana from up to 15 feet away.

And the clever canines are trained to sit when they detect drugs, leaving the final inspection to the parents.

The company was founded by a mother of two sons, who was surprised to find out her oldest son used marijuana after he was caught driving under the influence.

The company cites statistics showing half of American schoolchildren have tried marijuana and that most drug taking takes place when they get home from school
Sniff Dogs' co-founder Debra Holmes said accusations that the service was invasive and could break down trust within families were unfounded.

She said: "Parents think it's about cops busting into the house, as on TV, but it's not much different to a termite inspection.

"It's often a five-minute process as these dogs are so quick.

"Drug prevention should begin at home but there's been no way for parents to implement it."

A company spokeswoman said the team will come round while only the parent is at home.

She said: "A professional handler will accompany the friendly and intelligent dog as it does a room-to-room search of the premises.

"If the dog picks up a scent, it is trained to sit and the handler marks the spot. The search continues through the rest of the house and automobile."

Saw this the other day and thought it was a bit extreme. I thought parents hiring Private Investigators to snoop on their kids was bad enough but this is worse again.

So, what kind of things did your parents do to to keep tabs on you when you were younger?

Dunno if this is what you're getting at, but if I was 16 or so and found my parents snooping in my bedroom, they most certainly would find communication difficult with me.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Kids and their drugaí these days! Mine were grand, they had no reason to snoop on me. A tip for parents, maybe talk to your kids about drugs. Not too difficult I would imagine. <insert only in America comment>

I'm a private person and I'd be really pissed off if my parents searched my room like that

i have to agree there. when i was younger it was always the people with the open minded parents that were most level headed, because they could talk to their parents about most things. it was the ones whose parents used to sneak around after them and never let them do anything that would end up going on mad ones.

my folks were open minded enough, but they still did their fair share of snooping. but i had loads to hide so they were probably right to do so

You say that, but it is really awkward on both sides of that chat. Some folks just couldn't bear such a conversation with their kids and vice-versa, I know my parents and I couldn't...

It was the oposite with me, back in the 80ies my old fella caught me with an FM transmitter bug and said I would be out of the house if he found it again. :)

it defintily isnt as nerve wrecking as having the 'sex talk' with them though. that is always a horrible experience no matter what age you are. my parents were sort of ex-hippies so when it came to the 'drug talk' it was more them just recounting their own drug experiences. they played down the whole drugs thing so i took it as a green light that they were ok with it. of course when they found out i was taking drugs they went bananas. it was quite confusing. i think they were ok with smoking a bit of weed but it was hard drugs that they had a problem with. they really should have specified that a bit better

My parents don't go snooping around my room at all thank jeebus. They know I drink and all but they'd be pretty surprised to find a bottle of Jager, a bottle of Jack, a few cans and some scooby doobies. I'm so rebelious.

Edit: And actually I find it very easy to talk to them about anything. I'm not doing this to piss them off or nothing, it's just a way of having fun. Or something like that....

My parents were disgustingly hippy. I had to make up my own rules to spite them.

Give the man a break - I was just in a thread because the word "anal" was in the title.

I'm the youngest of five, and the only girl.

I had zero opportunity to creep in drunk, partake of illegal substances, leave the house wearing age-inappropriate clothing, or be caught in a compromising position with a teenaged boyfriend. Boringly, none of these things appealed to me anyway :o.

My parents were so liberal that being 'good' was considered rebellious.

No my parents don't snoop round my room but if they did they would find some weird things. I hid a bottle of whiskey I robbed from them in my room for a while. And when I went through the I'll rob anything phase I took some very weird things. Like domestos any playdo.

Do they come and see you on visiting day, or are they waiting for your release?

what about those of us whose friends smoked weed, who always refused? i did that for years, and probably came home smelling of the stuff often enough, which, apparently, is something those dogs would have picked up on. which is just kinda bull****.
