Memory upgrades for Dell 4700

    Hi there,
    I have a tech. question to ask if there is someone out there can solve.

    Some months ago I upgraded my Dell Dimension 4700 from 512 mb by 2gb
    That was 2 by (1gb modules) and I then had 2.5gb on board.
    So far everything was great, In MY COMPUTER Properties I had the full 2.5 GB. However I upgraded again recently by replacing the 512mb (2by256) with another pair of 1gb modules. Now in the BIOS I am told I have 4 (1GB Modules. The problem is that according to the Dell manual... I would not have use of the full 4GB as some componets use up some of the memory

    What I find strange is that My Computer (properties ) tells me I have only use of 3.25GB Question is how can my system use up 256mb more than the original system which had only 512mb on board

    I am stumped. Can someone explain???
