Myself and 3 mates are hoping to go to the Alps during the Tour De France to see the race and do a few of the climbs. I have heard that it possible to hire good bikes over there at that time of the year and all we'd have to do is hire a car to travel around. Has anyone done this before, and if yes would anyone have an websites, phone numbers or any suggestions to what would be the best way of planning it.

If there are 3 of you going and you are not going to stay in the same hotel for the duration you should consider driving, you can take your own bikes and what ever gear you want, for a week it works a bit cheaper than the three of you flying, hiring a car and bikes, for 10 days or 2 weeks it is way cheaper.
From Calais to Vittel (Stage finish on 16th) is about 5 hours drive, leave Dublin on the early boat on the 15th July, you will get to Calais that evening and be on the Tour route by lunch time on 16th. You could go on into the alps the next day and pick up the tour again on 21st, 22th 23rd and again on Ventoux on the 25th

Stayed in this hotel in the alps last year, the location is fab and it is run with cyclist in mind, but next years tour is not very close.
