Cow burps 'worse than car fumes for the enivronment'
A herd of cows belches out more climate-changing gas than a family car, a researcher claimed yesterday.

Dr Andy Thorpe said the methane produced by 200 cows in a year is equivalent to the CO2 from a car driven 111,000 miles.

Over the past 250 years, CO2 emissions have risen 31 per cent while Methane - which lasts longer in the atmosphere and has a greater effect on global warming - is up 149 per cent, he added.

The Portsmouth University economist said the main culprits were cows, which can produce 80kg of methane a year, sheep, goats and camels.

Dr Thorpe blamed the rise in methane emissions on the "hamburger connection" - the greater demand for meat from prospering nations.

He added: "Methane emissions are likely to increase."

Here is top gear talking about a Cow Vs Range Rover

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kY-ZKkPezow

Hamster on Top Gear had three Rovers on a drag strip.

1 was powered my Cow Dung
1 was powered by Human Waste
The other I think was powered by Ethanol

All modified cars for that purpose of course.

The Cow Dung Car won with human waste a slow second.

    All this talk of 'cows'.

Don't the calves, heifers, bulls, bullocks, fart or belch? ;)

They should add a "how much meat/dairy do you eat" section to them carbon footprint websites. If cows weren't "mass produced", the world would be a better place :)

Whither E92 to tell us that we shouldn't then convert to eating lamb because sheep use 13% more grass per mile and cause nasty indigestion to kids?

Seemingly we should switch to Kangaroo, they produce no methane at all:

    200 cows = car driven 111,000 miles

    => 1 cow = car driven 555 miles

The burgers are safe just yet, methinks. ;)
