Anyone else been affected by the fault in the BT Exchange in Limerick City? It seems to have been down since Wednesday night and BT cannot say when it will be fixed.

I'm not sure if it only affects business broadband but we have been unable to get on the net for days now and being without email is crippling!

Is there anyone out there using two ISPs for disaster recovery?

Same thing happened with BT about 6 months ago. Some companies were down for two weeks. Every company needs to have a back up link these days.

Hmm, how to pick a backup ISP...

My concern is that, AFAIK, BT and eircom equipment mostly reside in the same building close to each other. If the building was 'knocked out' in some way that impacts the equipment then there's not much point in using both ISPs. I know the likelihood is low but if we're doing a serious disaster recovery plan then it must be considered.

We have an underused ISDN line so I suppose we could consider this as a fall back for email only.

What do you guys do? What ISPs are reliable and have their own installations? Is there any who specialises in this?

Thanks for your ideas in advance :)

BT lost the contract where I was working earlier this year as the service was down for almost a week and was only back for 3 days when it failed again.

I think IT picked Magnet or Irish Broadband to replace them.

Magnet would be a good option. Very good speeds and reliable. They also use a lot of their own equipment at the exchanges. Depending on your location you might be close to 2 exchanges so check if you could get your 2nd link routed through a different exchange. If your company are serious about disaster recovery/prevention they might consider a leased line, but your talking big bucks for that.
